"I Walked in Darkness .. ."
By Floyd Dunn
I walked in darkness, depressed and lone and sad-
'Til one happy day my soul was made to blossom forth by the sunshine
radiated by one who chanced my way.
Walked in ethereal happiness, glad.
My life, heretofore enveloped in dismay, burst forth as a flower and
drank deep of her radiance.
But, even as the sun must pass on to light other worlds, so must she move
on to illuminate other chasms;
And I, left alone to the night of self-reliance, can only recede and
veil the treasure that was only for her.
"Could I But Bar . . ."
By Belvie Lee Hiler
Could I but bar the door
Against the moaning of the wind,
And shut without the stealthy frost
That creeps and wriggles through the cracks;
So that the weird, bewitching voices from out there
And the cold breath of avid terror
Could not reach my ears nor chill my feet,
Nor hold me in their spell-
Could I but bar the door securely,
Then might I feel the warm, sure glow
And see the leaping of the flames
Upon the hearth before me.
Is it not true that the fellow who is always
pulling at the load will never be pushed around?
By Charles Garner
Man is like a swinging door-ever turned, vacillated, by those who madly
dash about him.Page 13
