S I' Poignant
In terlude
By Norma Ruth Moser
Deep in my heart these fragments shall I hold:
Bare trees through rain-washed windows, and the scent
Of green things growing; ivy on the walls;
The dormitory, perhaps worn some for its years,
But bright with youthful laughter and the sound
Of singing down its faithful corridors.
The velvet sweep of chapel hymn; unshed tears;
Cold winter evenings, spent beside the fire
Or at the feet of one in whom my trust
Is sure-whose knowledge could have moved the stars.
Clean sunlight on the steps: groups of girls;
Gay banter tossed into the air, and caught
Between the doors. The peace of that one office;
The joy of having as a friend this one
For whom each problem is a simple thing.
So much returns to overflow my heart:
The Christmas tree, and carols and the feel
Of hope, and calm, and love that fills the air.
The sense of work well done when day is through.
The aching growth into maturity,
Which leaves the heart exhausted, yet retains
The best and worst of adolescent you.
An unexpected kiss upon return
To this place long called home-this place
Wherein new thoughts and new ideals grow
And in changing show their height as well.
And friends. Perhaps some day I can forget
Their faces and their names and all the life
We shared. I doubt it though. We had too much.
Soft serenading in the evenings, and
The pain one cannot stifle at the thought
That this will soon be over. Time goes fast:
As one small unit of this school I've loved,
I now fare forth to face realities-
And leave this hour-my poignant interlude.Page 12
