It has often been said change is the only constant.
I Everything changes at some point whether it be
I people or places nothing stays the same.
Today's Army is no different in that aspect. New
I equipment and systems are constantly being fielded
to improve the way the Army does business.
One of the latest changes comes in the logistical
I area. The Standard Army Requisition Supply Sys-
tem Objective is the Army's new way of ordering
supplies according to Lt. Col. Robert Reeves III
I Corps chief of supply and maintenance division.
"SARSS-0 is a series of computers which inter-
I faces with the unit level logistics system" Reeves
I said.
Ordering supplies through SARSS-0 begins with
la requisition passed from the unit to the forward sup-
port battalion.
A lateral search is done by computer to see if the
|part is located in the battalion's inventory.
If the part is not available at battalion-level the
Icomputer continues its search through the brigade
|division and corps Reeves said.
The search doesn't end at corps-level however.
If the part is not available in the corps' assets
I SARSS-O continues its search by looking into the
(assets of the entire Forces Command.
If the part is found at another post SARSS-0
Irequests that post to send it to the unit that needs it.

The heart of the new system is located at the 13th
Corps Support Command's 4th Corps Material Man-
agement Center.
SARSS-O is run by the Corps Theater Automated
Data Processing Service Center Phase II a hardware
system at 4th CMMC.
"All supply transactions on the entire post come
through here" said Sgt. 1st Class Gwendolyn
Simmons noncommissioned officer in charge of lo-
gistics systems automation branch.
The CTASC-II is connected to units on post by
modem. The central system allows units to access
parts in inventory anywhere on post or the country.
This was not possible before SARSS-0 came
along Simmons said.
SARSS-O has many advantages over the prior
system Reeves said.
"One of the main advantages is that it will allow
the Army to save money" he said.
Another advantage of the new system is its speed
in processing supply requisitions.
"What used to take days now takes a matter of
hours" Reeves said.
Those who work directly with the system agree.
"I think the new system is much better" said Pfc.
Cassandra Faison an automated logistical special-
ist. "It allows easy access to parts and assists us in
helping our customers."
The Army's senior leadership feels very good about
SARSS-O because it will save money reduce stock
and improve the Army's operational readiness.
