Keeping the body conditioned for
active-duty servicemembers is a chal-
lenge. For pregnant soldiers the task is
intensified as they strive to maintain a rea-
sonable level of physical fitness.
The Fort Hood Community Health
Nursing Department Preventive Medicine
Service Darnall Army Community Hos-
pital provides pregnant servicemembers
the opportunity to participate in the Ac-
tive-Duty Pregnancy Fitness Program.
The ADPFP is designed to assist the
pregnant soldier with performing low im-
pact aerobic exercise to help strengthen
and condition muscle groups used during
labor and delivery and to maintain over-
all physical condition said Capt. Crystal
Chatman-Brown registered nurse CHN
PMS Darnall.
"The program also offers the soldiers
a nurturing supportive environment for
education exercise and growth during the
soldier's pregnancy" Chatman-Brown
said. "The soldiers are given lectures of
the proper ways to eat during the preg-
nancy and what to expect during delivery."
According to Chatman-Brown this is
the first program of its kind at Fort Hood.
"Thanks to a study by Col. Elizabeth
Wanersdorfer nursing education and staff
development services Fitzsimons AMC
Aurora Colo. we are able to provide a
physical fitness training program for preg-
nant soldiers" she said.
About two years ago the study took
place on Fort Riley Kan. Fort Carson
Colo. and Fort Hood. It was used to de-
termine whether pregnant soldiers partici-
pating in a structured exercise program
would have the ability to pass a physical
fitness test Chapman-Brown continued.

"Because of the success of the pilot
we can offer pregnant soldiers a chance
to maintain their physical fitness program
during their pregnancy."

"The ADPFP can enroll up to 100
soldiers at any given time. This program
is voluntary but once the soldier has en-
rolled she must attend each mandatory
class" she said.
"Program attendance is monitored
and turned in to the soldiers unit" she
continued.
Soldiers participating in the ADPFP
have found it very beneficial to their health
and mental well-being.

"During the P.T. portion
of this program I get a good
cardiovascular workout. At
the same time I'm building
muscle" said Pfc. Tanesha J.
Kinney Company B 215th
Forward Support Battalion
1st Cavalry Division.
"I'm also receiving a lot
of information about
parenting growth and devel-
opment of my body and my
baby's body. I'm learning a
lot. I'm glad Fort Hood has
this type of program" Kinney
said.

agreed with Kinney.
"This is my second preg-
nancy during my first preg-
nancy in the Army I didn't
have the opportunity to par-
ticipate in this type of pro-
gram. I have learned things
about my body and my baby's
living quarters even though
this is my second pregnancy"
Warren said.
"The P.T. helps me stay
active and in shape. I like
working-out and meeting other new moth-
ers. I really enjoy this program" Warren
said.
Warren Kinney and Chapman-Brown
all believe the program is an effective way
for mothers and babies to begin their lives
together.
"The end result of this program are
healthy mothers/soldiers healthy babies
and a smooth transition from pregnancy
to birth to work" Chapman-Brown said.
