M Alexander Calder's Flower (1949) is commissioned by Mrs. Alex Camp and the
Dallas Garden Club and given to the DMFA. Three bowls by Otto and Gertrud
Natzler, Dallas Art Association purchase, gift of Contemporary House and the
artists.
* Contemporary American Drawings. K The Craft Guild of Dallas and the DMFA
co-sponsor the first Annual Texas Crafts Exhibition. Selected Works from the
Winterbotham Collection of 20th Century European Paintings are on loan from the
Art Institute of Chicago. Contemporary French Paintings. Rio Grande -
River of Destiny: Photographs by Laura Gilpin.
Q Dallas artists Velma Davis (later Mrs. Otis Dozier) and Esther Webb (Mrs. John
Houseman), with the financial support of Mrs. Alex Camp, begin sponsoring
classes in certain crafts at the Museum School.
S The DMFA inaugurates an "Art Rental Plan" as a means by which to support

U At the instigation of Stanley Marcus, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Reis of New York give
Jackson Pollock's Cathedral to the DMFA. Andrew Wyeth's drawing Beckie King
is given by E.L. DeGolyer. A series of paintings by Tom Lea is commissioned by
Life magazine and given to the Museum. Glen Lukens' Glass Charger is given by
Miss Clay Vedder. A group of enamels by Ellamarie and Jackson Woolley and a
bowl and vase by Bernard Leach are purchased through the Dallas Art
Association.
* The DMFA is selected by the Metropolitan Museum of Art as one of five regional
centers to receive and judge entries for a large survey exhibition of contemporary
art. Tom Lea: Paintings (DMFA).
* Director Jerry Bywaters is elected to membership in the Association of Art
Museum Directors.
Q The Museum introduces a weekly television program on WFAA-TV called "Is
This Art?"
