A Chronology of Contemporary Art in Dallas.
1949-1988This chronology is by no
means comprehensive. In the
interest of time, we decided to
limit ourselves to the history of
this institution, rather than
attempt to describe the larger
history of contemporary art in
Dallas as a whole. Indeed, we
hope that this rich feast of ac-
quisitions, exhibitions and
activities will lead other stu-dents of the arts in Dallas to
create a truly synoptic history
of contemporary collectors,
dealers and artists of Dallas.
This chronology makes clear
both the scope and the variety
of contemporary art collected
by the Dallas Museum of Art
since 1949, and conveys the
spirit if not the extent of ac-
tivities in this exciting field in
the Dallas community over thepast four decades.
The chronology included in
this publication would not have
been possible without Jerry
Bywaters' generous permission
to excerpt from his book,
Seventy-Five Years of Art in
Dallas, which remains the most
authoritative source of infor-
mation on the history of this
institution prior to 1978, in-
cluding its involvement in thefield of contemporary art up to
that time. Others who helped
contribute significantly in re-
constructing the museum's past
and present interaction with
post-World War II art devel-
opments, include: Barney
Delabano, Paul Rogers
Harris, Janet Kutner, and
Jerry Henderson.
