report
During the lout few month we hare hod
freijuent occiwion to note this fact in the case
of tho dear departed child whose name has
boootno familiar to the readers of the Frek
Pbehh abroad as it was before at home. Ue
know that through his bright intellectual
gifts aud child-like purity and gentleness
"in wit a man niinplicity a child" his is a
cherished memory to all who personally
knew him. And not to them alone for we
have had letters from all parts of the coun-
try and distant Btutes expressing the interest
of the several writers in the writings and
other published memorials of the boy
some of which expressions have already
appeared in our columns. One styles them
"the sweetest revelation of childhood it has
ever boen my good fortune to to see." Sev-
oral others speak of their influence on their
children or young relatives. Another finds
them a source of religions exaltation and
spiritual pleasure and inspiration..
Closely allied to the above we have an
other illustration of the same subject in the
cose Of a lady resident in Kyle who died on
the last day of 1881 of consumption and a
notice of whose death appeared in the
Fiiee Press of January Ath. It not only
illustrates the above subject but also the
further fact of the improving chastening
and beneficent influence of suffering and
Borrow.
This lndy (with whom we were personally
unacquainted) wrote us in November last
in behalf of the son of a friend whom she
nau partially educated for a place in our
office to learn the printing business. We
qtlbte the following weighty passage from
her1 letter i
If you can take him i will be gratified
for I love to aid any worthy person who is
trying to throw off the aauinc; yoke of iRno
ranee aud prepare themselves for useful
ness in inis way i ininn we can serve uoa
better than many others practiced by pro-
fessing Christians."
In a subsequent letter she spoke of the
interest she had taken in reading the me-
morials and diary of our little boy and gave
that as her reason for wising to intrust us
with the charge before stated.
December 28th. she wrote us again ex
cusing herself for not having answered a
letter of ours sooner as follows :
I plead cuilty. and beer forgiveness on
the plea of ill-health and 'Christmas times'
which though dull to me I have tried to
make pleasant to others."
In the course of her letter speaking of
the training of children she again refers to
our "uoble boy Claude" and adds :
"Yes let his memory be ever present
as you say to make you a 'better and wiser
man ;' au incentive to lead you to that
beautiful home in the 'great beyoud' which
he now inhabits. My friend my sympa-
thies have been peculiarly drawn out for
you and your idol because I know from the
many touching lines penned by you that he
was such. The two poems in your last
number I now have in my scrap-book ; they
are beautiful. I too. am a victim to the
same disease and feel that soon my course
on earth will be ended for I am rapidly de-
clining. I will soon strike haudH with your
idol in the 'glory world' for I feel that I shall
kuow him there. But oh I love life yet
am rady to go. I have two boys to whom
my soul clings for them I would fain live ;
yet our lives are not our own. Sometimes
think of oue who in life structiles against
death for thoso she loves. Will be glad to
hear from you."
Two days later the writer saw 'the last of
earth." and instead of the latter we intended
writing her. we give this poor tribute to her
memory. But though dead she also liveth
and speaketh yet ou earth while we trust
she hits found that oliss in the 'great beyond'
which she so confidently anticipated. Would
that some reader or readers of means might
be inspired by the admirable sentiment first
quoted from her above to give of their
abundance to aid deserving young persons
who need aid. in their struggles to use the
language of this good Christian woman
to throw off the galling yoke of ignorance
and prebare themselves for usefulness."
