If I bad known when far and wide
We loitered through the summer-land
What presence wandered I y tnj side
And o'er you stretched Its awful band
I should have hu.hed tuy careless speech
To listen dear to every tone
That troiu your Hps fell low and sweet.
If I bad known!
If I bad known when your kind eyes

(Eye fravtly tender gsntly wise.
And earnest rather more than glad)
Bow soon the lids wduld lie above
As colJ and still as ssulptursd stone

If I bad known I
If 1 had known how from the strfle
Of fears hopes passlous here below.
Unto a fairer higher lire
That you were called 0 friend to go

And bushed each Idle sigh and moan.

And keep It constant ever there
If I bad known I
If t bad had known that until Death
Should with his finger touch my brow

So long my feet must tread the way

Editob Fbk Pubsh : The corners Jury
have just concluded their investigation of
the tragedy of Dorris House. The details of
this awful crime baffle description. The
cold blooded murder of Mrs. Sarah II. Dor.
ris by her grand-son RushoI Brown will
hardly ever be equaled in fact or fiction.
Th murderer is ticarcely 20 years of ago
university bred the pampered and petted
child of wealthy parents aud was the favor
ite grand-child of the venerable old lady
who lost her life at his hands. Russel
Brown with an accomplice named McGlew
called at the Dorris Mansion at 5) o'clock
last Saturday night aud after concealing
McGlew in his bed room induced his Grand
ma to enter the apartment by telling her
that his uncle Tom was very ill As tlw
old lady approached the bed the two fiends
spraug upon her Brown strangled her to
death while McGlew tore the diamond
rings from her fingers lacerating the flesh
frightfully. After throwing tho lifelom
form upon the bed Brown sneaked into her
bed room adjoining and took her gold watch
and chain from under the pillow end then
w itk his accomplice fled into tho darkness
and shared between them the npoi!s of tlds
most unnatural murder.
To-day Mrs. Dorris's will was admitted to
probate by which her immense wealth is
carefully divided between her dear children
and grand children and among those for
whose use and benefit she has bo amply pro-
vided in tho will and whom she commits
"to the keeping of our Gracious and Heav-
enly Father" is"my grandson Russe IBrown".
This unparalelod crime is the topic of con-
versation and tho cause of sorrow in every
housohold in tho city. Your correspondent
was for several years in partnernhip with
Mr. Joseph' Brown the father of ltussel
Brown aud consequently knew his child
KuKsel well and had frequent occasious to
obsorvo the grout lovo and generosity of
hisgraaidjuotlier towards this then unusualy
bright child who has so quickly developed
into tho cool and calculating perpetra-
tor of the'cap sheaf" of all murdors. "Can
such things be?"
Carl Kring whose cauo has been affirmed
by tho Supreme court is preparing to meet
his fato on the 24th. of this month and atone
for the murder of Mrs Dora BroeroHcr af-
ter tho lawi delay of nearly eight years.
All of Southern Illinois and the whole of
Missouri is in distress for want of feed for
stock and if it was not for tho providential
mild winter prevailing here cattle would die
by the thousands and the people would suff-
er fearfully. In many counties in Illinois
the people cannot pay tboir tuxes and the
governor has called the attention of the
Legislature for relief Cam Smtthe.
