Kvery war vessel carries from one

sil of any description whatever ink-
ing; through the Suez Can..l has to
carry one of special i.ittein. A search
light consists i-s-scntlally cf an arc
lamp of apcclal form a parabolic
mirror and a case to hold the lot the
case being mounted In two directions
viz. vertically and horizontally. The
hood as this case hi called. Is made
of sheet steel about. 3-U2 inch thick.
Tho turntable trunnions etc. are
of cast Btecl. The lamp box Is form-
ed as part of tho hood. Tho mirror
Is carried on springs In the back cov-
er and at the front of the hood Is
a "front glass" mounted In a Riinniet-
al l ing' and the dispersion lens when
carried Is hinged on In front of this;
Training Is carried out by means of a
worm and worniwhei I or by a rack
and pinion. Slewing is effected by
means of a pinion which gears into a
crown wheel on the underside of the
turntable or else U Is done directly
by hand. Tho Suez Canal regulations
require that the projector shall be ca-
pable of giving the light required un-
der two different conditions In the
first case a broad flat beam of light
Illuminating both banks and the ca-
nal uninterruptedly this being used
when theother ship Is approaching;
In the other case they require a beam
having the same angle of divergence
and Bonsequcntly the same width as
the first but divide dlnto two por-
tions with a dark intenal between
thus giving light at both aides but
not directly In front and so not In-
terfering with navigation of the ap-
