Historical documentation of art
department's Boyd house falsified
By Luke Skywulker
Staff writer
Scandal rocked the Wesleyan
community during spring break
when Quentm McGown, Fort Worth
Landmarks Commission member
and Wesleyan director of alumni
relations, and Kit Mall, associate art
professor, were arrested for alleged-
ly conspiring to falsify documents
claiming that the Texas Wesleyan an
department building is 100 years old
and that it is eligihle for historical
status.
According to sources at the
Commission, the building is not 100
but 10 years old.
The age discrepancy was discov-
ered by a file clerk at the
Commission who noticed that the
last zero of the building's age was
slightly larger. Further investigation
revealed that it was printed with an
obscure font, one found only in
McGown's personal computer.
This discovery spurred an investi-
gation which revealed that not only
had the building's age been falsified,
but all historical information that
had been advertised a.s a means to
gain notoriety for the art department
was actually the history of another
Polytechnic house which burned
down three years ago.
M. J.. Boyd, claimed by McGown
and Hall to be a doctor from
Missouri who built the. art building
in which he raised his five daugh-
ters, was actually a sharecropper, N.
K. Floyd, who barely managed to
feed his wife and 11 children while
surviving in a two-room shack on
Avenue C,
When the Floyd house burned in
1993, its records were destroyed and

the Boyd House story was fabricat-
ed to establish credibility for the art
building which until that time had
no recorded history.
Members of the Floyd family
responded to the neus with emo-
tions ranging from disbelief to
outrage, saying that their family his-
tory had been violated.
Provost • Tom Armstrong
expressed grief that highly respected
administration and faculty members
had stooped to such depths as using
underhanded means to attempt to
gain revenue.
"1 am shocked and disappointed,"
Armstrong told the Rambler, "and 1
am unsure how this will affect
McGown's and Hall's future with
the university."
President Schrum was unavail-
able for comment. McGown and
Hall are free on $50 bail..

Senior music major turns down

Christopher Lee rejects fame and

Senior music major Chistopher
Lee has turned down a season con-
tract with the Sydney Opera
Company for its 1996-97 season to
teach middle school music for the
Tarrant County Independent School
District.
Lee said, "Instead of pursuing
fame for myselfri wanted to give it
up so that 1 could give the opportu-
nity of tame to others."
This is not the first time that
Lee has turned away the offer of a
major opera company. Two years
ago, the Metropolitan Opera
Company in New York City offered
Lee the lead role for' its upcoming
season.
"1 felt it would have been a had
step for my career, " Lee said. "It
would have been a step down. If 1

Barbara Long, Wesleyan tine
arts coordinator and former pornog-
raphy film star, recently gave birth
to a two-headed child. Long and her
offspring have caused quite a stir in
local and international media. But
Long agreed to give only one inter-
view, and out of her strong
commitment to Wesleyan, she chose
to speak with this reporter.
Q: What was your reaction when
you found out that you were preg-
nant?
A: I was confused, happy and excit-
ed.
Q: When did you start showing?
A: In the eighth month.
Q: What was your reaction when
you saw your child for the first
time?
A: Oh, I fell in love. It's my child.
Q: Who is the father?
A: Father? What do you mean
father?
Q: How did you conceive the child?
Children? 2 in 1 ?
A: How does one conceive a child?
I thought you just got pregnant.
Q: Did you experience any cosmic
event before you became pregnant? •
A: How did you know that? How
did you know about my cosmic
event? I was standing out in the field
looking up at the stars and the moon
and it began to rain. There was this
bolt of lightning and it lit up the sky.
It came across the sky'and it said
"kerboom!" and up there across the
sky the stars clustered together and
spelled out Z-E-U-something or
other. Six weeks later I went to the
doctor. I had upchucked my lunch
and he said I was with child. It must

al scene. I should start at an intenfci
tional opera company rather than a
company here in the United States."
Lee said the Sydney Opera
offer would have been perfect for
this aim. Among the roles he would
have played are Don Giovanni in
Mozart's Doll Giovanni, Phillipe in
Verdi's Don Carlo, and Canio in
Leoncavallo's / Pagliacc'i.
But. as Lee explains, teaching
is where his heart lies.
"I want to be a role model and a
mentor for these students. By fol-
lowing my example they can most
likely, achieve or come close to
achieving the opportunities I have
turned down so far in my career."
Q: Does anyone want to study your
offspring?
A: Why? It's just an average child.
But yes. People, The National
Enquirer, The Globe, Sports
Illustrated, TV Guide, Working
Mother—they've all approached
me. And Disney too.
Q: How do you nurse the child?
A: We use Evenflow. Evenflow
offered me a deal. Free formula, if
my child is the advertising ploy.
Disney is doing all the promotions
for the child. It's, um, they're big,
really big. Move over Mickey!
Q; What are the names for the two
heads of your child?
A: Connie and Joe B. Joe B. because
he has blue eyes and Connie
because she looks like a Connie I
work with. Aren't they cute? I'm
sure you'll see them around campus.
I mean it's one body with two heads.
They'll stick out.
