And I would beg my mother
Pleading with her for just one more mouse
And once again
I came home petting a furry field mouse
Whistling to myself as I slid back the glass panel
Which kept my constrictor in
Then I kissed the little field mouse
And released him
Letting him plummet to the cage floor
But before the dust had settled
I saw through the glass
A writhing tale attached to a brown ball
Which squeaked between my boa's teeth
I pressed my face against the peepshow glass
Transfixed once again
By the beauty of the predatory ballet
The eternal dance between hunter and hunted.37
