Feeding My Constrictor
Benjamin Newland
As a child I loved
To watch its jaws unhinge and drag the mouse
Brown fur matted with blood and serpent saliva
Deep into its swelling gut
If you listened closely
You could just make out the cracking
Of the field mouse's bones
Against the scratching, shifting
Convulsions of the constrictor's throat
Which forced the rodent down
Its esophagus like a ram rod
And into the bubbling acid
Which would erode the corpse
Over the coming hours
Days, or weeks
Then he would sleep
Curled against the glass
Coiled like a spring
Contentedly flicking out his lazy tongue
Under the warmth of his heating lamp
Showing the slight bulge in his gut
Which would shrink with the passing days
Until finally he grew restless once again36
