Tito mortality aiiioiis' newspapers
within the last two years lias lieen so
great that it doM not iudieaiu u very
eoliKideraljIedeKieeiifonleriiriseainoiig
tlioso eoinmunities tiiat liave allowed
themselves without an ollort to hedc-
prived of their press. Thin is truth
that many excellent newspapers have
heen forced to Hiisiiciidliist at a lime.
when if properly supported they
would lrive lieen most hencllcial.
The great troulilo in this country is
that the people fail to justly appreciate
the press. A custom ruinous in its ten-
dency hy which the peoplo are led to
look on newspapers as not worthy a
living patronaKe yet hound under a
penalty of eternal condemnation to
watch with nrgua eyes tueir every
interest seems to prevail. Mer-
chants whose patronage alone con-
tributes to the existence of a daily
puper in this country where thesuh-
ueription at hest is Imt a tithe toward
support ins i'i advertise just as if the
eouiparativaly small patronage they
Kive would yield them neither income
nor prolit.' Again a vast mimher of
husiness men do not advertise at all.
AVedonotpropo.se to try to convince
this class of our i-readers of the truth
that the mere matter of advertising in
a good paper will pay them aside from
any other consideration. Some of
them know that it will and thoso who
do not believe it nrehnpossible to con-
vince. The experience of most newspaper
men in Texas is that few of her cities
have supported their daily newspapers.
Many of them havo eked out a misera-
ble existence for n year or two and
then either bankrupted or changed
hands in the latter case forsomecour-
ukcous man to make a renewed at tempt
only to meet with the same fate.
Just us newspapers are supported
they are enterprising and they go out
from their place of publication their
appearance indicating their local sur-
roundings. The business men of the
rising young cities of Texas will sooner
or later learn these facts and those
who I! rst discover what their newspa-
pers are commercially politically and
socially and who give tiiem a liberal
support will sooner prolit by being
represented by newspapers that will he
mi influence of ininiciibo benefit to
tliein at liomennd abroad.
Merciiants and nil advertisers should
think of these things and if the last
few years have proven witli few excep-
tions a series of abortive results in
newspaper enterprises is it not time to
consider "how much they can lay out
for their press annually in considera-
tion of its importance." Let this be
done and deserving journals can live
mid do good.
