LIM'OLVS SFEKH AT GKTTVS-iii.I'.G.
Fourscore and seven years ago
our fathers brought forth upon this
Cont.inenta new nation conceived in
liberty and dedicated to the proposi-
tion that ail men are created equal
Now wo are engaged In a great civil
war testing whether that nation or
any nation so conceived and so dedi-
cated can long endure. We are met on
a great battlefield Of that war. AVe
have come to dedicate a portion of
that field na a final resting place (r
those who here gave their lives that
the nation might live. It Is altogether
fitting and proper that we should
do this.
But In a larirer sense we canno'
dedicate we eannot consecrate wc
cannot hallow this ground. The brave
men living find dead who struggled
here have consecrated it far shove
our power to add or detract. The
world vlll little note nor long re-
member want we say here: but ii
can never forget what thev did here.
It is for us the living rather to
be dedicated here to the unfinished
wort which they who foueht here
have thus far eo nobly advanced. It
Ir rather for us to be here dedicated
to the great task remaining before
us that from these honored dead
we take increased devotion to that
muse for wliich they gave the last
full measure of devotion; that we
hero bithlj resolve that these dead
shall not have died In vain; that thin
nation under God shall have a new
birth of freedom and that do govern-
ment of the people by the people
and for the people shall not perish
from the earth.
