Prior to the award, Mrs. Gee graciously presented a fash-
ion show which depicted fashions through the Chinese Dy-
nasties. These young and lovely girls represented famous
Chinese characters:- Miss Regina Chien (Hsi Chih), Miss Yeh
wa Lee (Chao Fei Yen), Miss Ping Yu Lu (Yang Yu-Huan), Miss
Janet Goh (Liang Hung-Yu), Mrs. Suzanne Wong (Cheng Fei),
Mrs. Fen Chow (Hsiao Feng Hsien).
Consul General and Mrs. Shan-chung Lee were honored and a
citation was accepted in behalf of the Republic of China.
"The integrity of a civilized society depends, for its
strength and survival, upon the dedication and the com-
mitment of those rare men and women who set aside person-
al ambition and gratification and devote their talents,
their minds and their characters exclusively to serving
and guiding the people of a national society for whom
they act as leaders and governmental officials; and
whereas, the election of His Excellency, Chiang Ching-
Kuo, as the sixth President of the Republic of China,
brings to the office of head of state a man whose vast
talents and learning have so effectively and compassion-
ately served the people of China, and whose visits with
several Presidents of the United States as Premier have
given him an understanding of America and the American
people: now, therefore, be it resolved," proclaimed
Mayor Pro tem Mancuso, "that the City Council of the
City of Houston convey to President Chiang Ching-Kuo
its sincere congratulations upon his election as the
sixth President of the Republic of China, and express to
him its respect and friendship and its recognition of
him as a staunch advocate of a democratic society."
In accepting the citation Consul General Lee responded,
"Mayor Pro tem Mr. Mancuso, on behalf of my government
I am pleased to accept this kind message from the City
of Houston, our dearest sister city. I can assure you,
it will be forwarded to my government immediately. Thank
you very much."
Speaking for the Houston World Trade Association were
President Alvin Martin and Executive Director Bernard
Murphy. Another distinguished speaker was President Macy
Smith of the Houston-Taipei Sister City Committee.
Door prizes donated by Chinese restaurants and the Chinese
Consulate provided excitement and fun. The pretty wives
of City Councilmen Louis Macy and Larry McKaskle made the
drawings.
The gift of a Tea House Pagoda will soon arrive from Tai-
pei to be presented to the City of Houston for construc-
tion at the site of the Rose Garden in Hermann Park.
