Provost Marshal
Takes The Wheel
The other day a man came in
my office and told me this story:
"I was driving 45 MPH at night
on the highway. A speeding car
passed me from the rear cut in
suddenly and crowded me off the
pavement. My right wheels hit a
soft shoulder so I pumped the brak
es and slowed down to about 20
MPH.
"Then I tried to ease back on
but the right rear tire skidded along
the edge of the pavement causing
me to swerve and hit an oncom
ing vehicle headon. My wheels cut
into the shoulder although it look
ed level with the pavement."
This man wanted to know who
was at fault in the accident. I
had to tell him that it was caused
by him because he used the wrong
technique to get back onto the
pavement.
He should have slowed to less
than 10 MPH positioning his right
front wheels at least two feet from
the edge of the pavement before
turning the front wheels sharply
back onto the pavement.
This would have precluded skid
ding along the edge of the pave
ment. Of course first he should
have looked each way before at
tempting this pull back. This is
especially important since the
rear view mirror shows only that
directly behind and fails to re
veal vehicles following in the adja
cent lane.

Safe Delivery
Made Possible
By 3rd APU
The success of that all import
ant feature of late afternoon MAIL
CALL is the direct responsibility
of a little publicized Fort Hood
unil the 13 man 3rd Army Postal
Unit.
These are the men that take the
thousands of letters received here
at Fort Hood every week and sort
them out for eventual distribution
to individual personnel of each of
the battalions and separate units
stationed here.
They will along with the United
States Postal Service take some
of the credit for the safe delivery
of the mail that is sent to the men
of this Post but claim absolutely
no responsibility for that "letter
that was never sent."
The 3rd APU was activated here
in October of 1950 to handle that
essential Army service of mail de
livery. Their work so far has been
distinguished by speed and effi
ciency.
In addition to the mail delivery
service the 3rd APU operates a
complete locator system and re-
directory service. The locator sys
tem aids in the rapid and accurate
location of individuals on the Post
and operates on a 24 hour basis.
The re directory service is op
erated by the unit for faulty or in-
packages.
