Lady Rams tally two wins against Quincy University
Marc Nettles
SPORTS EDITOR
The Lady Rams' Softball team
successfully sent Quincy University
packing all the way back to Illinois
on March 4.
With a well-oiled team flow
and uncanny squad chemistry, the
Lady Rams
proved their
togetherness
even before
the game in
warm-ups
led vocally
by the outgo-
ing starting
center field-
er, Rachael
Bachelder.
These
women only
want one
thing when
it's time to
play ball, and
that is put-
ting another
'W' in the
win column.
They
accomplished this twice on Monday
against a team
with much more numbers in the
dugout.
Cindy Obsivac started game
one on the mound for the Lady
Rams and looked good in the early
going striking out the first Lady
Hawk to step up.
After a little trouble in the first,
Bachelder mowed down a possible
run at the plate from center to bring
the Lady Rams up
to the plate.
Wesleyan came out with much
more energy and hustle than the
Quincy girls.
That energetic fire was further
fueled by the bat of right fielder
Monica Barrilleaux and the pitch
that she took over the right center-
field fence. The knock put two up
on the board.
Quincy tallied one in the top
half of the second to up the totals to
2-1.

the second game. Right: The Lady Rams con-

homerun in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Quincy's momentum in the form of
an infield single hustled out by
shortstop Shannon Gower in the
bottom stanza of the third frame.
Cammie Lancaster, left fielder, beat
out a dribbler to the left side of the
diamond.
Barrilleaux added to her RBI
total for the game with a double that
scored Gower.
Starting first baseman Ricki
Greenstreet drew a walk next with
catcher Christy Mize waiting on
deck.
Quincy's pitcher, Julie
Lemaire, continued her control
problems and walked in a bases
juiced walk.
The Lady Rams' good, poised
pitching and hard-playing defense
proved too tough for Quincy in
game one.
In the top of the fifth, a run was
avoided by a great display of the
leather by both Bachelder and
Gower.
A sprawled out, diving
Bachelder held a would-be double
to a single. Gower backed up a
diving Crystal Christerna, third
baseman, and got the force-out at
third to end the Lady Hawks'
threat that inning.
A momentum shift seemed
eminent in the top of the seventh
as Obsivac sur-
rendered first
and second bases
to Quincy run-
ners and then a
perfectly placed
one-out bunt
landed runners
on all three bags.
The Lady
Hawks were able
to knock in one
more run, but
further damage
was halted as
Obsivac forced the
Lady Hawk to drib-
ble a grounder back
to the mound,
resulting in a 1-2-3 double play
ending game one with Wesleyan on
top.
Key performances came from
Cammie Lancaster, who went 3-for-
3 with two runs scored; Shannon
Gower, whose defense and leadoff
ability sparked the Lady Rams;
Monica Barrilleaux, who wound up
with a two-run homer, an RBI dou-
ble, and three RBI's; and Cindy
Obsivac in the form of superior
pitching.

Game two of the Lady
Rams' double at home on
Monday seemed to belong to
the Lady Hawks early on as
they jumped to a two-run
lead in the first inning
against Lady Rams' pitcher
Barrilleaux.
Gower acted as a cata-
lyst to the ballclub by reach-
ing first base via another
infield single. She continued
to steal second and grab
third through

including
two-run shot over the left
field fence surrendered by
Barrilleaux by Quincy's
Lemaire.
Barrilleaux, in the bot-
tom of the fourth inning,
placed a three-run equalizer
on the other side of the fence
in left centerfield. The shot
made the score 5-4 Lady
Hawks at the end of the
fourth.
Gower led off the fifth
inning and reached base with
a single, stole second and
reached third base with
assistance from Lancaster.
She was brought home by a
single from second baseman
Amanda Sherry.
Barrilleaux's ensuing
single chased Quincy pitcher
Erin Moulton from the
mound and brought Sarah
Renner on. Sherry, standing
on third, capitalized on a
Renner wild pitch to score.
Greenstreet drew a free
trip to first, then Bachelder
came up and knocked in
Barrilleaux with an RBI
double in the gap. Amanda
Mashburn, catcher, also tab-
ulated two RBI's with a rip
placed between the center
fielder and right fielder.
Barrilleaux retired three
in a row in the top part of the
sixth inning to maintain the
team's liquid-smooth flow.
The Lady Hawks from
Quincy added one more run
in a too little, too late effort
only to lose 9-6.
Big numbers came
again from Barrilleaux with
a three-run homerun and an
overpowering presence and
from Gower. who has found
a niche as the team's spark
plug and catalyst.
The Lady Rams played
and won as a team with
amazing chemistry and a
good working repport. With
the talent and athletes this
team has and the chemistry
they possess, this team will
have a beautiful season.
Men's basketball falls to U. of Dallas in USCAA Tournament

Midnight struck for the Rams' dream season on
February 28, as the University of Dallas, riding an incred-
ible shooting display, defeated Texas Wesleyan 88-82 in
the Elite Eight at St. Mary's in Orchard Lake, Mich., at the
USCAA National Tournament.
The quarterfinal appearance was the furthest a
Wesleyan basketball team has ever advanced in a nation-
al tournament.
Wesleyan led 45-43 at halftime and extended the lead
to 12 points at 62-50 with 12 minutes, 33 seconds left in
the second half.
Dallas then used a 16-4 run to tie the game and held off a
late Ram charge to win.
The Rams shot 45.1 percent from the field, just two
percentage points lower than average, but 5 of 17 from the
three point line (29 percent) would prove detrimental for
Texas Wesleyan, who lost for only the third time since
Christmas.
Brian Fulton led the way with 20 points, Puggie
Brennen added 18 and Chad
Crenshaw chipped in with 17.
Coach Waldrop said of the
game and this season, "We ran
into the hottest team in the tour-
nament and they simply hit every
shot down the stretch. Dallas
went all the way to the finals and
lost at the buzzer. They were a
team that got hot and when they
beat us their confidence went
through the roof.
" 1 thought our guys played
with heart and determination as
they had all year and we simply
fell short in this game. 1 am very
proud of the team, especially the
seniors as they gave valiant
efforts in the tournament as they
had all season."
Waldrop said, "We fell
short of our goal of winning the

National Championship, but we competed
in the Elite Eight. That is something we all
can be proud of, and remember—this team
has left a legacy for future Ram teams to
build on. It has been a privilege to coach
these young men who have represented
themselves and Texas Wesleyan with digni-
ty and honor."
The final score of the second game was
Southern Virginia University 88, Texas
Wesleyan University 77. The Rams led 45-
44 at the break and weathered a 56 percent
shooting second half to the Knights falling
88-77 in the sixth place game on Friday
evening.
The Rams, who finish tt 7 in America,
end the season at 20-9.
Todd Chappell was awarded with First
leam Ail-American Honors and his team-
mates Chad Crenshaw, Shawn Ashworth
and Brian Fulton received All-American
Honorable Mention awards.
