English sidelined during
Sooners Red/White game
Oklahoma Sooner defensive end Aus-
ton English did not participate in OU's
annual Red/White game, but that d idn't
keep him from satisfying the Sooner
faithful.
After the Red squad defeated the
White team 69-40, English spent nearly
an hour signing autographs and taking
pictures with the fans. The cheers were
plentiful for the soon-to-be junior defen-
sive end as English signed autographs
longer than any other player.
English sat out the game to rest his
shoulder after having surgery in Janu-
ary, but expects to be at full strength be-
fore summer conditioning begins. "I feel
good," English said. "Rehab is going well
and I should be released during the first
part of summer."
Despite sitting on the sidelines, Eng-
lish put his time to good use. "You get to
coach a little bit [when sitting on the side-
lines]," he said. "[I enjoy] coaching those
young guys up and helping out wherever
I can."
English was recently named to the
Lombardi watch list. The Lombardi
award is given to the nation's top down
lineman. Although English was one of
56 players named to the list, he was un-
aware. "I didn't even know I was [named
to the list]," he said. The award will be
presented in December.
Oklahoma coach Bob Stoops thinks
his linemen will benefit from competing
against each other. "I think both fronts
are going to be really good," Stoops said.
"Our defensive line have the chance to
be a great unit for us, as well as the of-
fensive line. There is a lot of competition
out here."
Th Sooners are the defending BIX
XII Champions and open their 2008 sea-
son August 30 versus Chattanooga in
Norman, Oklahoma.
