July 4th, 1821.
Dear folks at home,--About
twenty five of us went out pionioing all day
today up the creek from town about 5 miles. Bessie
Grace and Jake will-be interested in knowing that in
the crowd were the Johnsons and the Sims family.
We got back in time to attend the fourth of July
celebration in honor of the Cooke County boys who died
in the war,a program of which I am enclosing. It was
a very impressive ceremony. Hugh will be interested
in the principle speaker of the day, Maury Hughes, as
they were school mates in Austin College.
Mr. Bowling called me over long distance yesterday
to inform me of the Doesonement of his meeting at
Pilot Point which was to have begun the 14th of July
and offering that date to Wolf Ridge, since they had to
postpone theirs because of the rush of threshing season.
took it up with the people out there and ftion they
were anxious to have it at that time and phoad him to
come on thee l1th. So we are going to have g
with us after all, and I'm sure we are going to a
good meeting for everything is just in the right
fion for it,

We thought we were going to use Mr. Bowling here in
town this week, but the session thought best not to have
a meeting just now. No good reason was put forward why
we shculd not have the meeting, and everything was ready
and everybody.anxious to have it; but for some unknown
reson the sesiob balked. I find I have to exercise a I
good deal of patience with some members of the session
of this church on many questions. Other members and
most cf the deaccns were thoroughly infavor of a meeting
and knew the church wanted it, but we were voted down.
I would hate to be a born balker, especially in a plaoe
of responsibility; and I would hate to be held account.
for the souls that such balking hinders from entering
into the kingdom of God, But I know full well that
patience and goodwill and lots of grace are all necessary
in all this work with narrow-visioned men as officers.
We are going to have the study classes with the
young people to start the last of this wekk if possible,
and to lose the last of next week in time for the
Wolf Rid; meeting. I think I see a wonderful bocst
for our otUng people in these olasses, espeoiilly if we
make them what they ought to be. It will simply mean
. learning how to do what they knew ncthing about before,
and may mean a real revival in Christian Endeavor work.
Be sure apd tell me if any body ii sick. How is
papa getting along now? I shall try to get home. July
25th. The meeting at Wolf Ridge will run ever Sunday
July 24th Lots of love
