Rusty Johnson, a saxaphonist who played at
Phases, circulated an e-mail on Wednesday
lamenting Alexander's sudden death.
"We lost more than a friend last night,"
Johnson wrote. "Dallas lost an inspiration, a
motivator, a visionary and a man whose heart
overflowed with a contagious love, infecting
everyone who was a witness to Dale Alexander's
smile. Few people did Dale not smile on."
Henry Harter, a bartender at Phases, called
Alexander the "best boss" he had ever had.
Everyone was stunned with they heard about the
accident, he said.
"You don't know from one day to the next,"
Harter said. "We're all still in shock."
Jim Vandenburg, manager of Phases, said that
although he is devastated by the sudden loss of
his good friend, the nightclub will continue to
operate.
"The bar will remain open," Vandenburg
said. "We're poised to have a great time."
Vandenburg said Alexander was one of the
kindest, most sincere people he had ever known.
Alexander opened Phases in an existing night-
club formerly known as Side 2. Side 2 closed in
December 2005.
Alexander had been a longtime friend and cus-
tomer of Side 2 owner Jerry Smith, who died of
throat cancer in February.
Alexander agreed to take over the nightclub,
with Smith as the business manager, when the
former owner lost his alcoholic beverage license.
Smith only worked for a few weeks before his
death.
After Smith's death, Alexander held an auc-
tion at Phases to benefit the AIDS Resource
Center's Food Pantry in honor of the deceased
bar owner. The benefit raised $3,000 from the
sale of a wooden phallus known as "Woody."

WORLD AIDS DAY IN COLLIN COUNTY
H
The Collin County World AIDS Day event — originally scheduled for Nov. 30 in Piano — took place on the morning
of Dec. 1 at the Collin County Community College despite an onslaught of wintry weather, thanks to the hard work
of several World AIDS Day Committee volunteers, organizers said. Although many people were unable to attend the
event, many members of the Collin County Gay and Lesbian Alliance were present. Rosemarie Odom, co-chair of
the World AIDS Day Committee, expressed special thanks to Collin County Community College District, the Collin
County Gay and Lesbian Alliance, OUT, AIDS Services of North Texas, the Resource Center of Dallas and American
Language Technologies, all of whom helped make the event possible, she said. Pictured are, from left, Cary Israel,
