Gayby-boomers flock together
Social circles usually change shapes when our buddies become parents
Dear Candy: I feel like I'm living an episode of
"The L Word."
Friends of mine are having a baby in a matter
of months. And while they keep
me "in the loop," I am so ambiva-
lent about these joyous events.
Their excitement has not rubbed
off, even though I smile and sup-
port them as best I can. And with-
out breaking into a Streisand ver-
sion of "The Way We Were," I
acknowledge that part of me is
grieving the loss of the way it used
to be. But try as I might, I don't
want to go to Gap for Kids to
shop. I'd rather stay single and
enjoy the childless pleasures of
Parigi — not Chuck E Cheese. So,
am I a terrible friend who needs
sensitivity training or do I need new childfree
friends?
Bummed
Dear Bummed: What I like about your letter is your
self-awareness. You know who you are, how you
think, what you like and how you tick. You are
also aware of the changes your couple friends are
going through and that these changes will
inevitably impact the friendship. I think most
people have to look back on their lives to see the
twists and turns in order to make sense of how
they arrived at where they are today. You have
the ability to anticipate the next move. This is
called vision.
I think being a visionary is truly a gift. Few
people possess this gift. Now, this gift to antici-
pate can also prove trouble-
some. It can be troublesome
because you can see the future
and other's cannot. The ones
who cannot see the future will
only be able to see one move
ahead. They will be staying in
the present and innocently and
unknowingly think life will
always stay the way it is at this
moment in time. You, on the
other hand, will be grieving
what you see coming — which
will be change.
To answer your questions:
No, you are not a terrible friend
who needs sensitivity training. What will happen
is, as your friends morph into a family, you will
spend less time with them. You and they will
bring new friends into your lives. You probably
will always be friends with them, but you both
will spend more time with friends who more
closely resemble how you live your lives current-
ly. Some friends are current friends, and some
friends are historical friends — friends we spent
more time with in the past than we do currently.
Continue to know yourself, be true to yourself by
doing things you like to do, and you will find
yourself surrounded by like-minded people.
Good luck.
