Partner-workout guide strives
to pump up muscles and intimacy
WHO NEEDS THE GYM? Using gravity and each other for resistance, bikini-clad authors Eddy Goicolea and Berg Arruda
provide an excellent excuse to ask a handsome stranger, "Why don't we exercise together?"
By E.J. Bernacki Contributing Writer
"Fit Together: How to Double Your Workout
Results with a Partner," by Eddy Goicolea
with Berg Arruda. Photography by Glen
Mitchell. (2004, Rizzoli New York) 160pps,
$29.95.
After paging through
"Fit Together," which
tries to impart wisdom
about building muscle
and burning fat without
going to the gym, you
might say to yourself,
"Let's just call a spade a
spade. This isn't a
workout book at all. It's
just a collection of
enticing photos of super-hot guys in matching
bikinis crawling all over each other in multiple
acts of frottage." And that assessment wouldn't
be entirely wrong.
Scattered throughout Glen Mitchell's titillating
images of perfectly groomed authors-models
Eddy Goicolea and Berg Arruda are an innovate
set of partner exercises that can actually help
build strength and flexibility.
The co-authors (who are also lovers) have
written and illustrated chapters on legs and shoul-
ders, arms and abs, back and chest and nutrition.
The promise to "double your workout results" by
following their advice, however, is a bit of a
stretch. "Fit Together" mostly springboards from
partner exercises that are based on tried-and-true
resistance routines that gym bunnies have been
performing for eons.
The exercises Goicolea and Arruda put forth
are wildly clever. Most of the exercises substitute
the human for a bench or the weight of your part-
ner for resistance. The more complex exercises,
however, require sharp communication between
the parties to gauge necessary resistance.
Goicolea and Arruda are clearly having fun
with "Fit Together," as is evidenced in several
photos and the names of some of their exercises:
"Ride the Donkey/' "Push Me Around," "Master
and Servant," "Pumping Pistons" and "Cheeks to
Chest," to name a few.
But what's missing from many of the partner
exercises is the ability to adjust weight. In many
cases, the exercises neglect taking into consider-
ation how heavy your partner might be. There's
also no room for adding or more importantly,
subtracting weight.
