When Lyndon I!. Johnson, vice
president of the United States,
answered the telephone at LKJ
kar.ch near Johnson City, at 12
o'clock noon last Saturday, his
u;i officially the first voice to
! ravel throutrii Hustrop's new
dial telephone system.
Mayoi Will Rogers, who had
be. 'n invited by the Southwes
'.ern Hell Telephone Company to
n.akt the first telephone call
(h i the switch-over from ti e
old -ystem to the new wa made,
placed the call a few minutes
earliei In the conver-ation that
followed. Vice President John-
son extended his congratulations
to Hastrop on the new tlial sys-
tem, and expressetl his best
wishes to the citizens of the
town.
Ha-trop's "I> Day" wa.- the
culmination of many days of
hard work on the part of the
telephone company, and as many
days of interested watching and
waiting by Hastrop's telephone
user The beautiful new build-
ing, soon tj be open to the pub-
lic for inspection, and all of the
intricate equipment were final
ly complete, and on Saturday,
a few minutes before noon, op-
erators cleared all calls on tne
. old switch board, the wires were
pulled, and the old system was
dead.
In the new building, the huge,
complicated installation, with its
masses of coiled wiring, was si-
lent. Kxactly at 12 o'clock, en-
.•ineers made the connections
that opened the circuits. For
i few ,-econds, all was quiet.
Then, with a few hesitant clictcs,
the sleeping giant stirred, slow-
ly, timidly, at first, then grad-
ually came to life as the clicks
gained in confidence and fre-
quency Hastrop was using the
New dial phones!
Present for the occasion, with
Mayor Rogers, were a small
group including representatives
from the city council, the Has-
trop Chamber of Commerce, the
Citizens State and First Nation-
al Hanks, and other visitors.
Representing the telephone
company were L. R. tiriffin, dia
trict manager of Austin; C. L.
Carson, manager, of Taylor; J.
P. Youngblood, district plant su-
perintendent, of Austin; S. C.
j IA e, district traffic superinten-
dent. of Austin, and Mr. Thorn
ton, assistant to Mr. Loe, of
Austin, and the local employees.

Majority Of Operators
Transfer To Austin
With the passing of another
milestone in the development of
modern communications, Hastrop
bade farewell to the "voice with
a smile"—operators whose friend-
ly interest, dependability and
courteous accommodation, local
telephom users had learned to
i recognize and appreciate.
Remaining on duty in Bastrop
now will be Mrs. Norman Craw
ford in the commercial depart-
ment; K H. Smith and J. L.
Hamons with the plant. Klvira
Jutierrez will continue in the
new building, to keep it spot
