Texas golf organizations
form Junior alliance
HOUSTON (AP) — The state's top four golf organiza-
tions have formed an alliance aimed at creating better
opportunities and ease expenses for junior golfers and their
families.
The Texas Junior Golf Alliance is a joint venture put
together by the Texas Golf Association, the Northern and
Southern Texas Sections of the PGA of America and the
Houston Golf Association.
The four organizations collectively sponsor more than
500 tournaments a year for more than 6,000 junior
boys and girls. The goal of the alliance is to simplify the
qualifying process for the top-tier Legends Junior Tour's
high-profile events through a performance-based points
system.
Each of the four organizations will offer a select number
of Texas Junior Golf Alliance Points Tournaments in their
respective 2012 schedule. A total of 45 junior events will
offer points.
Competitors may also accumulate points in the seven
open events and one invitational operated in Texas by
the national American Junior Golf Association. Juniors —
players between the ages of 12 and 18 — will now have dual
membership in their respective programs and the Texas
Junior Golf Alliance for a single membership fee.
"The junior golf landscape in Texas can be intimidating
Texas Golf Association. "Everyone involved hopes this will
clear the path toward advancement while reassuring them
of the quality of the events they are competing in.
The Texas PGA sections offer beginner's programs for
youngsters. While players between 6 and 11 years old will
not be competing in statewide events, they will be educated
in the opportunities afforded by the alliance.
"Kids in this program will no longer have to travel all
over the countrv to participate in qualify events," said Mark
Harrison, Northern Texas PGA executive director. "We'll
have outstanding competition, conducted at the highest
level of administration, on a wide variety of exceptional
golf courses."
Texas sehool bus crash
sends 32 to hospital
TEMPLE, Texas (AP) — A tractor-trailer clipped a school
bus full of students Tuesday, flipping the bus onto its side
and sending 32 people — 29 of them children — to a central
Texas hospital. Police said a 9-year-old boy was ejected
through the escape hatch in the bus roof, and the bus driver
was knocked unconscious.
The accident occurred about 7:30 a.m. on Farm-to-
Market Road 93 on the southeastern outskirts of Temple,
about 60 miles northeast of Austin. Trooper Harpin Myers
of the Texas Department of Public Safety said a nardware
truck apparently ran a stop sign when it hit the Academy
school district bus. Conditions were foggy, but it was
unclear whether that factored into the crash, Myers said.
Three of the 29 children being treated were admit ted to
the hospital, one in critical condition, while the other 26
were discharged, said Katherine Voss, a spokeswoman for
the Scott & White Memorial Hospital in Temple. Academy
school Superintendent Kevin Sprinkles said the three were
expected to recover, although ' they all face a long road" to
recovery.
The bus driver also was listed in critical condition, but
both of the other adults, including the truck driver, were
treated and discharged, Voss said.
Sprinkles said the bus was carrying about 38 children
from all grade levels and was on its way to drop students
off at the first of three school locations when the crash hap-
pened.
Christina Mendoza said she was driving to work when
she came upon the accident scene and stopped to help.
"There was a bunch of li ttle ones all scraped up, and they
were all alone," she told the Temple Daily Telegram.
Mendoza said she has teenage children who usually take
the bus but they did not on Tuesday.
Counselors were to be available for students at the
Academy schools on Wednesday, Sprinkles said.
Dozens cited over South
Texas cockfighting ring
SAN ANTONIO (AP) — Investigators who broke up a
cockfighting ring in South Texas have cited more than 70
people and seized about 140 roosters.
The Bexar (bayr) County Sheriffs Office also confiscated
blades, cages, harnesses and about $42,000.
A Texas Department of Public Safety helicopter was used
in Sunday's raid in southwest Bexar County.
The San Antonio Express-News reported Tuesday that
deputies cited 74 people and impounded 26 vehicles left
unclaimed after the alleged participants tried to flee.
Animal Care Services helped remove the live roosters,
plus about 20 dead ones.

Alleged cartel hit man
goes on trial in Texas
LAREDO, Texas (AP)
— The trial of an alleged
member of a Mexican drug
cartel hit squad begins in
Laredo.
The Wednesday trial of
Gerardo Castillo-Chavez
(kas-TEE'-yoh CHAH'-
vehz) opens in a border
city that suffered a spate
of drug-related murders
as rival cartels faced off
for control of lucrative
smuggling routes nearly a
decade ago.
Jury set
for NY trial
in murder
of Texas
dancer
GOSHEN, N.Y.(AP)-A
jury has been seated for the
murder trial of an upstate
New York man charged
with killing a woman he
met at a New York City
nightclub.
The Times Herald-
Record of Middletown
reports that jury selec-
tion wrapped up Tuesday
in Orange County Court,
where testimony is sched-
uled to begin Monday in
Michael Mele's (MEE'-
leez) murder trial.
The 26-year-old from
Wallkill is charged with
killing 25-year-old Laura
Garza after they left a
Manhattan nightclub in
early December 2008.
Her skeletal remains were
found in April 2010 near
Scranton, Pa.
Garza, an aspiring danc-
er, had moved to Brooklyn
from McAllen, Texas, five
months before her disap-
pearance.
Mele has several sex-
offense convictions in New-
York, most involving lewd
conduct in front of women
or girls.
Castillo's the first of
34 defendants named in
the case to go on trial.
Prosecutors say he was part
of a larger drug-trafficking
conspiracy run by the Gulf
cartel and its enforcement
arm at the time, the Zetas.
His 2010 trial ended with
a deadlocked jury.
Among Castillo's five
counts is being part of a
drug conspiracy at a time
when prosecutors say
teams of hit men were sent
into Laredo with a list of
targets.

Texas grocer gets prison
over food stamp fraur
BROWNSVILLE, Texas (AP) — A South Texas grocer
has been sentenced to almost four years in prison and
must repay nearly $2.5 million over electronic food stamp
fraud.
Prosecutors say 56-year-old Parviz Sheikh Rezaei ran
Pariz Dollar Supermarket in Brownsville.
A federal judge in Brownsville on Tuesday sentenced the
businessman to 46 months in prison.
Rezaei in August pleaded guilty in the fraud investiga-
tion involving swapping card benefits from participants in
the food stamp program for discounted amounts of cash.
Prosecutors say Rezaei would then charge the government
for the full value of the Lone Star card transaction.
Trustees
Continued from paget
lations and learn trends in educational leadership. They
also are deeply involved in community activities, and spend
many hours in the schools and at extracurricular events.
Their love of learning and concern and caring for students,
staff, and the community drive board members' desire to
ensure every student can succeed.
In recognition of this service, January is designated as
School Board Recognition Month and countless districts
across the state will take this opportunity to say thanks
to the trustees for giving so much to their communities.
"Make a special effort to tell each school board member
that his or her hard work has been noticed and is truly
appreciated."

THE ODD COUPLE???
Is there anyone in America that has not heard about "The Odd
Couple", Felix and Oscar? Two men of very opposite personalities and life-
styles sharing an apartment. Well, this is a story of Felix and Chuck, another
rather odd match.
Chuck, a very gregarious, hard working and plain spoken song lyri-
cist and poet. Felix, a stock and avid lover of classical tastes and talents.
Before he died, chuck had written over 6500 songs. One such song
was never very well known because it seems no one could come up with a
musical score that made the song pleasant to hear and sing. It can be assumed
that this was a great source of frustration for Chuck.
Felix, known to have been a childhood prodigy who worked on
symphonies and concertos in his adult life, became a famous performer and
composer. After many years, Felix composed a tune, in part for the anniver-
sary of one of the world's great inventions. This tune carried the words and
thoughts of Chuck's song on the wings of melodious delight, and become a
song people loved to hear and thoroughly seemed to enjoy singing, felix titled
his tune:
"FESTGESANG, OPUS 68".
It is indeed almost strange how sometimes the differences in people
make for beauty and not conflict. For you see the song Chuck, or Charles,
(that's Charles Wesley) wrote in about 1740 had to wait for the tune Opus 68,
composed for the anniversary of the invention of the printing press in 1840,
one hundred years later, by Felix, that's Felix Mendelssohn.
That tune and that song we call:
"HARK: THE HERALD ANGEL'S SING"
