Big Step for Little House
Ground is broken on $2.15 million day care construction project
It's been years in the making, and will probably require an-
other nine months to complete, but that seems a proper gesta-
tion period for what will eventually be a brand new day care
home for Canadian's pre-school age children.
Ground was broken Tuesday morning on the $2.15 million
project to build a new Rachel's Little House—a partnership
project for which Canadian ISD pledged up to $2.2 million in
funding in exchange for an expanded facility that will double
the old day care center's capacity.
The new building—which will be constructed on a site ad-
jacent to Canadian Elementary School—will alleviate over-
crowded conditions at the old Little House, compounded by the
closing two years ago of this community's only other certified
daycare facility at the YMCA. It will also significantly increase
provisions for infant care, which has becoming a growing need
here that is particularly noticeable among the Canadian ISD
teaching staff.
Overseeing the design of the new Little House is architect
and Canadian native Garrett Pendergraft, whose firm—Dek-
ker/Perich/Sabatini—has been selected as one of the top 500
US-based design firms by Engineering News-Record. Talon/
LPE of Amarillo will handle the construction and general con-
tracting.
During the brief ceremony Monday morning, an excavator
d rew the first claw mark in the dirt, after which all shovels were
on deck, manned by Little House board members and staff,
school board representative Larry Gatlin, and representatives
of both Dekker/Perich/Sabatini and Talon/LPE. Small garden
spades, contributed by Coleman Bartlett of Bartlett Lumber,
were dispensed to each of almost a, dozen Little House students,
who energetically assisted in the dig.
Little House Board members Robert Ezzell and Alice Bent-
ley each spoke briefly to those assembled, thanking—among
others—the community for its generosity in
contributing to the day care center building
fund and the school district for its willingness to
invest tax dollars in the education of Canadian's
youngest citizens.
Todd Barbour, Vice President of Talon/
LPE, expressed his delight in being a part of
Canadian's growth and his interest in building
a first-rate day care facility. Barbour said after
the ceremony that he expected construction to
take about nine months from start to finish—
welcome news to the many families and Little
House supporters who have waited eagerly for
this day to come.
The contractor's guaranteed maximum bid
on construction of the new Little House is $2,041
million which—combined with the architect's
fee of 5.5 percent of project costs—totals just
over $2.15 million.
Costs of the project which are not included
in the construction or architect's fees include
landscaping, sprinkler system and playground
equipment. Most of the furnishings presently in
use at the old facility on Purcell Street will make
the move to the new location once completed.
Ezzell said that despite the funding agree-
ment with the school district, Rachel's Little
House is and will always be an independent
non-profit, non-tax-funded organization, which
sustains the day care center's daily operations
through the fees paid by its clients and the al-
ways welcome support and contributions of
Hemphill County residents.
