Raves for Canadian
THIS PAST WEEKEND, we hosted a Jacob
Hoobler III family reunion at our house. There
were several states represented among the 65
or so who attended, and many had not been to
Canadian since the 1988 reunion. Without ex-
ception, Canadian received rave reviews. All
were impressed with the beauty and cleanliness
of our city, and the friendliness of the residents.
The majority of our guests stayed at the
new Best Western Oasis Inn, where the chil-
dren enjoyed the indoor swimming pool. Some
brought camping trailers and set up in the
Taking care of our
business, Part II
IT ONLY TAKES A FEW to ruin it for a lot.
I was proud of Caroline Cornett to have the
nerve and care to approach the Commissioners
Court over the restroom issues around town. I,
myself, did not know about the restrooms being
closed off last year at the courthouse because I
spent most of my time at the rodeo arena in the
concession stand.
While I was very thankful to be working real-
ly hard for the band and to raise some money by
providing the concession stand, I was not happy
to have all the people complain to us about the
restrooms by the duck ponds and arena looking
so bad. I believe in the past it has always been
the individuals in charge of the; concession stand
who also take care of the restrooms during the
rodeo performances. However, after looking at
them myself, I did not want to tackle the job (it
had not been cleaned in some time) and I felt like
it was the county's job or whoever had the arena
in use to be the ones to clean it before, during
and after the performances.
After asking around about how bad they
looked and only having one individual involved
with the rodeo also look at it and agree that it
really should have a clean job from top to bot-
tom before the fourth, I was informed to just
tell people to use the porta-potties—that's why
Hemphill County RV Park, a great place to be.
There were very favorable comments about the
River Valley Pioneer Museum the Canadian
Visitors' Center, and of course the tour of the
world class Citadelle Art Foundation, an amaz-
ing attraction in our area.
Last but not least, the recent upgrades to
the Edith Ford Memorial Cemetery were espe-
cially pleasing. We are proud and humbled to be
a part of such a wonderful and thriving city that
has so much to offer its residents as well as those
who come to visit. Thank you to everyone who
assures that this atmosphere prevails.
JIM & MARGE HOOBLER
they were there.
My thought at that time was a bad i-efleetion
our town. People visiting here do not know who
is in charge of cleaning these restrooms around
here. What a bad impression on everyone in-
volved in our Fourth of July activities.
It really makes me mad that we have had
to stop so many things in town that we used to
do or provide for ourselves and visitors, all be-
cause of people destroying things or not being
respectful enough during the event. This is not
only from young people doing bad things, but
also from adults doing things.
I have been saying instead of worrying
about teaching our kids certain subjects in
school, maybe we should be teaching them man-
ners and respect starting inpre-school through
high school. Someday they will be adults. Also,
discipline needs to be a lot tougher on those who
do wrong.
I amnot looking to point the finger at people.
I just wanted the Commissioners Court to know
that there are others who have needed to come
forward (myself included) and express this
issue. I also wanted them to know that some of
us around town do appreciate what they have
done for this county. I am so pleased that they
are working on upgrading the Exhibition Build-
ing. It was needing some work.
We need to stop giving in to the bad and re-
member to all work together for the good.

All-School Reunion FAQ s
By Robin L.Mitchell, CHS Class of'79
Q: Who? What? When? Where? Why?
A: Canadian's Ex-Student's Association presents All-School
Reunion 2010 on August 7.
The event kicks off with a must-attend Saturday morning as-
sembly—time to be announced. "Mustattend" is code for you don't
want to miss this part. Classeg seated together, raucous laughter,
important announcements...what could be better?
Why? C'mon, you know why. Interesting people unseen in a
coon's age, rampant curiosity, abundant opportunities to laugh/
cry/laugh-and-cry at the same time, see who hasn't aged one bit,
brag about outstanding children/grandchildren and marvel at re-
ceding haMines,
Q: How do I get in on the fun?
A: If you have moved 12 times in 25 years, there is a fair chance
that your intrepid class secretary has no idea how to find you.
Write to the Canadian Ex-Students Association at PO Box 444,
Canadian, TX 79014^0444, e-mail chsexstudentstfllive.com (yes,
that's right: chsexstudents), call Janice Schafer at 806.217.1023
or Kyle Northcott at 806.217.0464, to report your current locale.
Soon. The rest of you should receive a mailing with all relevant
information and registration information between June 20-25.
Fill it out. Write a check. Consider donating to the scholarship
fund which, incidentally, is not limited to graduating CHS Seniors,
but is open for applications from all current college students. Mail
it back. Easy, huh?
P.S. Janice says volunteers are needed to help with the pre-
Reunion mailing, which should take place sometime around the
middle of this month, and will be a great opportunity to catch up on
the latest alumni gossip. The work day may involved a little folding,
licking and stamping—envelopes, that is—and will definitely as-
sure one's place in alumni heaven. Call Janice or Kyle (don't make
me tell you those numbers again) to volunteer.
Q: Canadian? In August?
A: I have it on good authority that a deal has been struck with
Mother Nature to guarantee moderate temperatures, light winds
and a gorgeous sunset for the weekend in question. Should that
fickle omnipotent force welsh on the agreement, well—there's al-
ways A/C Superintendent Extraordinaire Kyle Lynch will surely
promise that the school's air-conditioning provides prime climate
control for several days before the big event to insure that ump-
teen thousand square-feet of building will be Cool for the arriving
multitudes.
Keep telling yourself, "It's dry heat."
Wind? It's the Panhandle. You rose above it in school—you can
handle it now. Remember the good ole days: playing football/ten-
nis/golf and running track in gale-force "breezes?" Frantically
maneuvering in an heroic attempt to keep clothing in place? Hop-
ing grit-abrasion was good for the complexion? Sure you do. It's all
part of Canadian's charm.
Oh, and picture-perfect sunset? It's practically guaranteed.
If you haven't visited C-town in a while, be prepared to be im-
pressed by the new motels, available bed-and-breakfasts, variety
of restaurants and venues and beautifully restored downtown.
These amenities will combine for a fantastic visit. Lots of money,
time and effort have been expended on the sprucing up. Many
classes are planning their own activities. Come and enjoy it.
Don't forget to send your picture and fond memories to The
Canadian Record, which is offering all CHS Exes (or CHSexes, if
you prefer) a full-color ad (3.5x3.5") with a photo and personalized
message (to classmates, to chums, to old girlfriends—you get the
idea) for just $42 each. (Custom sizes are also available). Those ads
will be published in The Record's special CHS All-School Reunion
edition, which will await you on newsstands on Thursday, August
5. For more advertising information or to reserve your spot, con-
tact Holly Henderson at advertising@eanadianrecord.corn.
For story suggestions, information about your individual class
reunions (time, location and other pertinent information), and/or
to line up a photo of you with all of your classmates that weekend,

sible!) at editor@canadianrecord.com.
