Cats pounce on Panthers for sixth consecutive victory
By Jason Turner
The Wildcats featured a huge second
quarter by senior quarterback Coleman
Bentley, defeating the Panhandle Panthers
36-14 and securing the top playoff spot in Dis-
trict 1-2A. Bentley tossed 5 touchdowns, four
in the second quarter, and finished 21-of-32
for 230 yards, 5 scores and one interception at
Panhandle last Friday night.
Canadian is 8-1 overall and 4-0 in District.
The win guaranteed the Cats at least a share
of the District championship.
"We didn't have quite the start that we
wanted," said coach Kyle Lynch. "But we had
a really nice second quarter."
The Wildcats totaled 417 yards of offense
versus Panhandle and accumulated 19 first
downs. The Cats rushed for 180 yards and
were led by Danny Reyes who had 105 yards
on 7 carries. Reyes scored Canadian's first
two touchdowns, scoring on a 40-yard re-
ception in the first quarter and catching a
27-yard touchdown in the second quarter.
"He's just stepped up every week," said
Lynch. "It just so happens a lot of times, he's
the guy that's open. Offensively, we honestly
don't have a big plan to get any one guy the
ball, but we do have a plan to spread the ball
around."
The Cats and Panthers traded punts after
Reyes' first touchdown. Canadian's punt into
the wind gave Panhandle possession at the
Cats' 32-yard line. The Panthers converted
two third-downs in seven plays and scored
on a 12-yard reception by Caleb Fields. Pan-
handle took an 8-7 lead after a two-point con-
version.
"We've been pretty good about not panick-
ingwhenpeople putone in the endzone onus,"
Lynch said. "We've been good about going
back, executing and answering. We've done
that a number of times this year and I think
it's a positive trait to see in our team."
Danny Reyes'second score lifted the Cats
to a 13-8 advantage and Alex Reyes added to
the lead with a 36-yard touchdown reception

from Bentley, giving Canadian a 19-7 mar-
gin.
The Wildcats' defense forced a Panther
punt and Canadian's offense drove 42-yards
in four plays, ending with a 10-yard touch-
down reception. Tim Brock made the catch
short of the goal line and stretched the ball
into the endzone for the score. Bentley tossed
to Alex Reyes for the two-point conversion,
giving Canadian 27-7 lead. Brock finished
the game with 2 receptions for 27 yards and
one touchdown.
Panhandle started at their own 20 after
the ensuing kick-off. On their first play, quar-
terback Matt Smith connected with Caleb
Fields on an 80-yard touchdown, cutting the
Wildcat lead to 27-14 with 2:44 remaining in
the first half.
Canadian scored the final touchdown
of the game on their next drive. The Cats
marched 63 yards on 7 plays, ending with
a Bentley-to-Clay Cockrell 14-yard screen
pass for a touchdown. Clint Cockrell caught
the two-point conversion from Bentley, push-
ing Canadian's lead to 35-14 at halftime.
The Panthers controlled the ball for most
of the third quarter, having possession for
10:18 of the 12-minutes. On their second drive
of the half, the Panthers drove inside the Ca-
nadian 5-yard line, but were unable to reach
the endzone. Facing a third-and-goal situa-
tion, Panther QB Matt Smith was intercepted
by senior cornerback Zach Knight.
Canadian was unable to capitalize on the
turnover when Bentley was intercepted on a
screen pass two plays later. Panhandle again
moved inside the Wildcats' 4, but were turned
aw ay when Clay Cockrell intercepted Smith.
After trading punts, the Cats drove in-
side the Panthers' 5 before turning the ball
over on downs. Bentley completed to Clay
Cockrell on 4th-and-goal, but Cockrell was
stopped short of the endzone.

The Wildcat defense held Panhandle
inside their 30-yard line for the rest of the
game. The Panthers' passing game finished
10-of-32 for 142 yards, two touchdowns and
two interceptions. On the ground, the Pan-
thers managed 107 rushing yards, led by
Colby Skidmore who finished with 90 yards
on 28 carries.
"He was a bit of deceiving runner," Lynch
noted. "You would think that we got him, but
you would look up and he would have five
yards."
The Wildcats host the West Texas Coman-
ches tomorrow (Friday) night at Wildcat Sta-
dium. Kick-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
