News From Your
County Agent
Johnnie A. McKay
Cherokee County is stiH in-
cluded in the sweet potato wee-
vil quarantined area I was dis-
cussing the situation with David
!vie of the State Department of
Agriculture this week and he
tells me that there arc only two
sweet potato weevil infestations
in the county These are at At ton
GrovcandaboutlmileNorthof
Ponta. This is considerably
fewer than last year, so some
progress is being made in their
eradication.
Since we are suit m the
quarantined area, it means that
m< st farmers may bed their
potatoes to produce slips or
plants for their own use, but
may not produce plants for sale.
Sweet potatoes may be field
planted without restriction ex-
cept within a one mile radius of
the infestations; however po-
tatoes may be sold only in
quarantined areas. If you arc
near one of the infested areas
you should contact Mr. David
Ivie. State Department of Agri-
culture, Tyler, Texas.
In general, no plants or po-
tatoes will be certified. Ac-
cording to Mr. Ivie, none will be
certified in 1he South end of the
county and only a few indi-
viduals may be expected in the
North end of the county.
Officials do recommend that
all persons producing sweet po-
tatoes in the countv carry out a
dusting program on their po-
tatoes to help further eradicate
this pest. Dusting plants once on
the bod and twice in the field
with 2'rdieldrin dust is recom
mended for control. Generally
4(1 pounds of dust per acre arc
recommtnded about the time
roots start to enlarge and again
about 2 weeks later.
Several livestockmen are
feeding high quality (10 to 15
per cent crude protein) coastal
bermuda hay as the only source
offeedtotheir cattle this winter.
Only salt and mi!)erals are
being fed in addition. Cattle rc-
