Contributions

These papers, which cover the period from 1909-1966 have been available on microfilm for many years, but the lack of searchability has limited their usefulness. A digitization grant from the Tocker Foundation has made them available to the public.

Other local history collections, not included in this digitization process, include research papers contributed by members of the Thursday Study Club covering all aspects of Alto and southern Cherokee County history, and over 2700 historical photographs now being exhibited on Flickr.

Stella Hill Memorial Library contributes for digitization all extant issues of the local weekly newspaper, the Alto Herald. The newspapers from 1909-1966 provide an ongoing picture of life in and around this small town located on El Camino Real in southern Cherokee County. Alto is one of the oldest towns in East Texas, and the newspapers, with their feature stories, obituaries and advertisements chronicle the history and lifestyle of the era. The digitization was funded by a grant from the Tocker Foundation.
