AM A woman of 59 and have
* been asked by a man of 62
to marry him. Does he expect
sex?"
This is a delicate question. But
it is an important one to men and
women approaching the retire-
ment years ... to both the
married and unmarried ones. !t
seems fitting that this column get
into the subject, with the oniy
kind of information it can give—
which is what people voluntarily
write in to the column. And tit is
just might be a little more reli-
abie than what peopie arc getting
from some other sources.
What peopie write in to the
coiumn wonid indicate that the
woman who asked the question
above had better consuit a Ouija
board, or eise ask the man. No-
body except the man really
knows. And he may not know. He
may think he knows ... or hopa<.
What peopie write in would al<o
indicate the foiiowing:
That the jokesters who make
fun of the oid man who announces
that hi! 26 year-oid wife has gitan
birth to their Rrst child may be
wrong. They may be right, too.
But they can be wrong.
That the woman past age 55 or
so, if married, isn't too interested
in the matter. H her marriage is
good, she is tolerant. H it is not
she is negative.
That the woman at 55 or ao who
has not married is strongiy nega-
tive. She is at age 50 or so aiso.
Through the 40*s the woman who
has never married is often in-
clined to have an open mind.
After 50 she is inclined to think
the rules have changed, whether
they have or not.
That women, married or un-
married, ciose the door on this
subject through a mental process
rather than a physical one.
That men from age 50 on give
women more trouble than women
give men, or try to. Men close
the door on the matter through a
physical proccss. Mentally, they
seem never to give up.
That the subject of sex is sim-
ply no problem for married peo-
ple in the gray-haired years if
they iove each other. They are
interested in it together. Or they
aren't interested in it together.
The ietters indicate they may be
interested in it together up to age
63 or so.
That men past 55 don't phi-
lander, no matter how mean their
wives. At *5, yes. At 51. maybe.
Not after 55. They get sieepy.
That men past 55, past 65, past
75 like girls. But after 55 or so
it's mostly just looking at.
That wives past 55 or so can
fool their husbands when the mat-
tar comes up. That husbands
can't.
That husbands want to prove
things to themselves at Mm*
time or other Maybe at 42. More
Hkeiy at 50. Possibly at 60. They
entertan ideas that a new woman
is what they need. Sometimes they
try for a new one. Almost always
they come back to their own
hearth, wiser, embarrassed and
eontrite. Women don't feel this
urge, at some time or other.
This column is shorter than
most. It should be.
