Austin, Aug. 24. —Correct posture
] in school children, and adults as
{well ,is neces<*ary to proper physical
} and mental development, says a
(warning from the Texas State De-
partment of Health. "Good posture
is a sign of self respect and plays an
{important part in winning the re-
I spect of others," said Dr. Geo. W.
} Cox, State Health Officer.
"Many of the ills of childhood and
the deformities of adult life have
their beginning in poor posture ac-
; quired during childhood," he said,
"and it is particularly important
that the child's posture conform to
nature's dictates. Most children are
! borr in good physical condition and
yet examination of large groups of
] school children show a high per
; cent to be suffering from poor pos-
ture. Malnutrition and fatigue are
productive of poor posture. These
lessen the size of the chest and de-
crease the lung capacity. Abdominal
organs may also be pushed out of
natural position, which may seri-
ously interfere with their action.
These conditions must be corrected
before the body is able to attain
norma} weight and nut,ri'tiona!
standards.
"School children who have pour
posture are said often to average
lower in attendance and in school
mental and physical activities than
those who have good posture. A
child may be forced to hold his body
in an unnatural position by a desk
that is too high or to low. Desks and
i work tables should be just high
enough to allow the feet to rest on
tTte floor and the forearm and hands
to rest upon the tops without the
shoulders being hunched up.
"Begin early in lite to teach yout-
children to stand straight and
straight for health and self-confi-
dence, and they should grow into;
strong, well-built men and women."
The sincerity of a man in public
offict is often tested by the failure
of good citizens to actively support
an intelligent vote.
