ETEX WOMAN WHO
SLEW SIX CHILDREN
GIVEN 495 YEARS
Failure to pay for gasoline which
they secured at a Rusk filling station
landed two white youths in jail
Thursday.
Driving a red V-8 Ford pickup
allegedly stolen in Henderson, Earle
Clark and T. D. Methvin stopped at
the Rusk station, had gasoline
placed in their tank and then drove
away without paying.
Sheriff Bill Brunt was notified,
and he in turn called Marshal Clint
Eddings to stop the car at Alto.
Eddings held the men for Brunt,
and they were returned to Rusk.
They are wanted in Henderson, it is
stated, for theft of the truck, which
was taken earlier Thursday.
Clarl: was charged with driving
while drunk in Cherokee County,
Brunt said. Methvin was turned over
to Rusk County officers, and Clark
will be delivered following his trial
in this county.—Jacksonville Progress
Center, April 6.—Mrs. Lillie May
Curtis, who killed six of her nine
chitdren as they slept, was given a
total of 495 years in the peniten-
tiary in her trial Wednesday on five
of the six murder counts.
She was given a 99-year sentence
in each case. One case was left
hanging.
A 5-year suspended sentence for
killing her husband in a similar man-
ner three years af& was ordered con-
tinued.
Mrs. Curtis will be transferred to
the state penitentiary probably
Thursday, when prison agents wert<
expected to come for her.
The chiidren, killed, she said, be-
cause she could not provide for them,
ranged in age from 5 to 13.

Saturday, according to a local
sheik, is the day when the good
looking country girls come to town.
One of the most difficult problems
that comes with the depression is ad-
justing the scale of living to the re-
duced income.
It often happens that a failure is a
man who took a chance and lost
and the successful man is one who
took just as wild a chance and won.
The good old days were the days
in which good sized families were
supported on what many families
spend for gasoline.
TRANSPLANT TOMATOES
Jasper, April 5.—Tomato growers
of Jasper county have transplanted
about 75 per cent of their plants, S.
W. Monroe, county agent, estimated.
About 75 acres will be devoted to
tomato cultivation, and it is believed
the fruit will mature more than two
weeks earlier than last year on ac-
count of the seasonal "jump" induced
by unusually warm weather.
A Vermont woman is suing another
woman for a million dollars for
taking her husband. We know sev-
eral women around here who would
gtve that much to get rid of their
husbands—if they had it.
