G. S. Davis, of the Goodyear Tire
& Rubber Company of Houston, was
in Alto Modnay. and closed a con-
tract with the Alto Herald for several
hundred inches of advertising for
Goodyear Tires.
The Goodyear Tire and Rubber
company ig one of the largest users
of newspaper space in the United
States, and will spend two millions of
dollars in Texas alone during 1931
to advertise Goodyear tires.
"It is just a business proposition,
with Goodyear," said Mr. Davis, "we
^iave a product that is worth the
money, and we know it, but our
'knowledge of that fact does not help
Ins any if we don't let the other
fellow know it, and we have found
long ago, that a man will sit down
and read a newspaper, and see our
(advertising a whole lot quicker than
he will flashing by a bill board in an
automobile."

Huces the salary of the county judge,
and I believe that these salaries are
high enough in these hard times, and
this law is intended to prevent fur-
ther increases, which are frequently
made by ex-officio salaries allowed
by the Commissioners' Courts.
The cattle dipping law includes a
dumber of counties in the timber helt
of East Texas, and provides that
dipping shall not be compulsor. in
those counties, unless twentk five
per cent of the voters petitioh the
Commissioners' Court to put jit on,
and the Court ia prohibited fram is-
suing any warrants or incurMptr any
debt against the county to /ay the
cost of dipping. It furthe* provides
that where any county is carrying on
systematic dipping, as ou! county is
now doing, that the Live Stock San-
titary Commission shall deciare the
county free fnom ticks, and release
ft from quarantine as s<on as the
ticks are eradicated.
This law cannot be yassed by a
two-thirds vote, ]f paau'd at ali,
;and will not go into ef ect before
August 13th, and this wii) give time
to eradicate the ticks in our county,
according to the statements of the in-
spectors in charge of the work, and
then the county will be rcieased from
dipping if those in charge arc telling
the truth.
Those who favor dipping in all
the counties are in the majority in
the Legislature, and no law can be
passed exempting certain rounties
(from compulsory dipping, unless the
law we have introduced can be passed
and it is doubtful if it can b< passed,
though we have the promise of a
good many votes from western mem-
bers, if they are assured th:n we will
[ not ship out any tick infestn! cattle.
I I am discussing these measnres for
the benefit of the people, h cause I
&m not trying to "slip anything by,"
as has been done in the past.
