ence, says K. Laniity, in the
final windup whether yoli did

The Thirty-first legislative
will convene next Mondaj*.
There will be many important
measures come before that
body—the one of most state-
wide importance being the sub
mission of a state prohibition
amendment. There are able
men on both sides of the cjues
tion, and doubtless much hot
ait "CVill be expended for and
against the proposition, cost-
ing the state thousands of
dollars.
The editor spent Christmas
week on "the island," in Nac-
ogdoches count}', with several
others from Alto, duck hunt-
ing. But he isn't going to say
a word abottt "Uncle George"
Findley and himself getting
lost after dark, and speeding
half the night by a camp fire
in a drizzling rain, howling
for assistance. Uncle George
said he would wljip us if wp
" told about it, and we're afraid
to, for lie can outrun us.
It is not many days until
the indictment fof false swear-
ing against H. Clay Pierce
will be made to appear as not
worth the paper it is written
on, says the Tyler Courier.
But when we come to think
about how profitable that in-
dictrtient has pfoven to quite
a number of Texas politicians
and place-hunters, we are re-
minded that it has served as
a good stepping stone to many
men who delight in fooling
the people, and who are in a
measure successful in doing so
sofc'ialisrfl oti d Hfiiited and
selfish scale. A ifttle gang of
meu form a trust; secure the
result of the labor of the
masses, but fefiise to divide.
Hither form of socialism is a
failure, so far as justice and
equity are concerned—K.Lam-
ity's Harpoon.
Tne Tyler Courier pats the
Nacogdoches Sentinfel on the
back in the following lauda-
tory manner: "The Nacog-
doches Sentinel; more than
any other one infltienfce, has
succeeded in making of Texas
a tobacco growing state, and
the state which is now grow-
ing the highest priced tobaefco.
The Sentinel has been con-'
staut for years in urging the
growing of tobacco, and nat-
u ally enough the country
near the town of Nacogdoches
was the first to successfully
grow the best tobacco—tobacco
equal to the best grown in
Cuba and Porto Rico. The
Courier congratulates the Sen-
tinel on its final success on
bringing to its locality an in-
dustry which will enable its
farmers to become exceed in glv
prosperous."

The "trusts ' are apparently
afraid of socialism, and their
organs declare it the greatest
menace to the country. I be-
lieve they are correct. Social-
ism, as I see it, If adopted by
the American people, would
put an eternal end to all fu-
ture progress in this Country.
If people held everything in
common, there would be 110
possible incentive to individ-
ual effort. What would be
the use to excel some man as
a financier, or 011 any other
line of business, when you
knew the results of your gen-
ius or labor was to be distrib-
uted equally to every big, lazy
loafer in the country? The
principle won't work,'and nei-
ther will tlie most violent ad
vocates of socialism—if they
can help it.' Jf fntsfc* is merely |
