So, I am reflecting today on my 41 year career as a teacher of students from Kindergarten to graduate school...
Truly, I have loved every minute of it...I have had the privilege and the honor to spend my life in a career that has
brought joy to my heart, tears to my eyes, challenged my patience and creativity, and most of the time also paid
my bills.
One of my freshmen students shared a quote with me this semester about teachers...One I hadn't seen before. It
hangs on the wall in an orphanage in Africa for children whose parents are HIV positive. It is a quote by John
Steinbeck, and it goes like this...
Teaching is an art and there are as few great teachers as there are great artists.
In fact teaching may be the greatest of all the arts because the medium is the human mind and spirit.
As this is one of my last official acts as a full-time teacher and editor of The Journal of the Effective Schools Pro-
ject, my challenge for you today is that you go out there now or continue to be that GREAT TEACHER or AD-
MINISTRATOR. I know you can. In the future, as you come to the end of your career as I am in the next few
days, you will see your reflection in the mirror and honestly say, "There is nothing else I would have done with
my life...I have no regrets....I am and will always be a teacher....I feel very blessed to have that honor."
I know each of you makes a positive in the lives of those you teach every day. Keep it up.
I want to thank for your hard work and dedication to the children of Texas. I know you all will continue to support
ESP and The Journal. Thanks for that... We cherish those partnerships. We, at TSU, learn so much from you and
are so proud of your accomplishments reflected in this year's Journal!
And thank you, too, for allowing me this time of reflection.
Sincerely,
Pam Lindsey, Ph. D., Editor
