Alamo, TX - Once again,
another wonderful collection of
art entries was received for the
Federal Junior Duck Stamp
competition held at Santa Ana
National Wildlife Refuge. This
year over 500 entries from all
four categories made judging a
bit of a challenge. However, the
more entries received, the better
the chance that the State of
Texas could have to win at the
national level.
The goal and purpose of the
Junior Duck Stamp
Conservation Program (Junior
Duck Stamp) is to "teach
conservation through the arts."
This program teaches and gives
a broad exposure to migratory
waterfowl in their habitat
through art and a science-based
educational curriculum. The
program includes lessons to
increase students' knowledge
and appreciation of migratory
birds and provides activities
geared to motivating students to
take on active roles in
conserving these species.
Students in grades K through
12 participate year after year.
Every student is invited to
participate even if the student
does not have any art
experience. The overall state
winner receives a monetary
award and then competes at the
national level with the
possibility of being the national
winner.
The national winner is
awarded a $5,000 cash award
and a free trip to Washington,
D.C., to participate in the First
Day of Sale ceremony in late
June/early July. The national
winner is accompanied to D.C.
by his/her art teacher, one of
his/her parents and his/her state
coordinator. The program is
modeled after the Federal Duck
Stamp Program and gives
students an opportunity to create
a design for a non-postal stamp.
Every student is recognized for
his or her participation and all
are considered winners!
Only 25 entries in the Group
III category (grades 7-9), placed
at the State level. Three were
selected for First, Second and
Third places. The remaining 16
entries were chosen Honorable
Mention. Roma Middle School
is proud to announce that the
entry by 8th grader Aduar S&enz
was selected Honorable
Mention.
Graduating students receive
TAMUK ring as symbol
Graduating students from
Texas A&M University-
Kingsville who purchased an
official school ring received
them during a special ceremony
recently. A separate ceremony
was held in San Antonio for
students attending Texas A&M
University-Kingsville System
Center-San Antonio.
Graduates and alumni are able
to purchase an official Texas
A&M-Kingsville ring. It was
designed several years ago as one
of numerous new traditions
started by university officials.
A committee of students,
staff, alumni and faculty selected
ArtCarved to design and
manufacture the ring. Its
symbols reflect the university's
history and traditions.
The symbols include the
school's mascot, the javelina,
because of its tenacity; mesquite
and cactus, because they
personify the students' ability to
survive and prosper; palm trees,
because they are found all over
campus; the Lone Star, because
it symbolizes the state of Texas;
and the College Hall clock
tower, because it is a recognized
landmark on campus.
Horacio Flores, a native of
La Gruiia, recently received
his official school ring. He is a
criminology major. Juan Jose
Moreno of Roma also
received his ring. He is a
mathematics major.

I'm Free - Author Unknown
Don't grieve for me, for now I'm free
I'm following the path, God laid for me
I took his hand when I heard Him call
1 turned my back and left it all
I could not stay another day
To laugh, to love, to work or play
Tasks left undone must stay that vvjy
I found that place, at the close of day
If my parting has left a void
Then fill it with remembered joy
A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss
Ah, yes, these things I too will miss
Be not burdened with times of sorrow
I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow
My life's been full, I savored much;
good friends, good times, a loved one's touch
Perhaps my time seemed all too brief
Don't lengthen it now with undue grief
Lift up your heart and share with me
God wanted me now. He set me free.
We would like to express our sincere gratitude to relatives, neighbors and friends for the kindness and
sympathy during the loss of our husband/brother. We thank those who attended the services, gave
gifts of food, flowers, plants, cards, prayers, phone calls, and visits. It was these special gestures that
helped us endure the loss of Arturo.
