RGC Lions to be honored as Fair Marshals
The Rio Grande City Lions Club, most of whose members are pictured above, will be honored as
Parade Marshals at the 2006 Starr County Fair Parade, scheduled lor this Saturday at 10:00 a.m. I hey
will lead the parade, along with the Rio Grande City High School JROTC and the Starr County Fair
Queen and her court. The Lions have served the County Fair as volunteers at the gate for more years
than anyone can count.
Defendant in Warren murder pleads
guilty, gets 20-year sentence
Mary Jacquelyn Requenez
won the title of Starr County
Youth Fair Queen for 2006 at
the Starr County Fair Pageant
held at Rio Grande City High
School on Sunday, February 26.
Jackie is the sixteen year old
daughter of Antonio and Maggie
Requenez of Rio Grande City.
A senior at Rio Grande City
High School, she was sponsored
by her parents. The new Fair
Queen, who is president of the
Rio FFA and the Starr Grande 4-
H Club, enjoys baking, hunting,
horseback riding, reading and
swimming.
Top winners in the Princess
categories were as follows:
Gabriela Gonzalez, daughter of
Norberto and Idolina Gonzalez,
Teen Princess; Lori Ann
Martinez, daughter of Martin
and Lori Martinez, Pre-Teen
Princess; and Eliza Briana
Rodriguez, daughter of David
and Velma Rodriguez, Petite
Princess.
Runners-up to the Queen
were Clarissa Michelle Oliva,
first runner-up; and Bianca
Montalvo, second runner-up.
Teen category runners-up
were Emily Zarate, first runner-
up, and Melanie Marie Garza,
second runner-up.
Runners-up in the Pre-Teen
category were Annika Caren
Nufiez, first runner-up; and
Tanya Marie Rodriguez, second
runner-up.
Petite Princess runners-up
were, Evelyn Zarate, first
runner-up; and Bianca Garcia,
second runner-up.
Other competitors in the
Queen category included (in
order of appearance) Emily

2006 Starr County Fair to
reach peak this weekend
The last remaining defendant
in the 1996 abduction and
murder of Jessie Ray Warren II
of Rio Grande City pleaded
guilty to aggravated kidnapping
in 381st District Court
proceedings on Feb. 16 and
received a 20-year sentence as
recommended by the
prosecution.
Assistant District Attorney
Marco A. Trevino indicated on
'Friday, Feb. 24 that Juan Saenz
Montoya "pleaded guilty to the
aggravated kidnapping charge in
the Warren case. He was
sentenced to 20 years in prison.
He waived all rights to appeal
and all rights to habeus
corpus...This is basically a done
deal."
Trevino declared, "He accepted
responsibility for all the other
charges against him. Basically,
the document indicates that he
'admits guilt to all the other
charges.' The other charges were
attempted aggravated kidnapping
(of Jimmy Newman), aggravated
M.A.D.D.,

Candlelight Vigil
March 9
Mothers Against Drunk
Drivers (M.A.D.D.) and The
Starr County Community
Coalition invite all interested
persons to attend the First
Candlelight Vigil of
Remembrance and Hope.
The event will be held on
Thursday, March 9 at 6:30 p.m.
at the Multipurpose Center
inside the Fort Ringgold campus
in Rio Grande City.
To RSVP, interested persons
should call 716-1795. A
reception will follow the
service. Persons are urged to
bring a photo of their loved one
for MADD's Memorial Board.

Acevedo), possession of
marijuana, and capita! murder."
Saenz was facing trial for
capital murder in the February
1996 abduction and murder of
Warren. Trevino explained, "We
were scheduled to pick a jury on
Feb. 16, but he pleaded guilty
and waived a jury trial. He also
waived any jury involvement in
the sentence."
The prosecutor added, "The
sentence was handed down by
(District) Judge Pope that same
day. The trial was instantaneous.
The sentence was recommended
by the prosecution in accordance
with the (plea) agreement."
Warren, 31, was abdjeted
from his home just northwest of
Rio Grande City by several
attackers after a fierce struggle in
the early evening hours of Feb.
17, 1996. His badly decomposed
and partially burned body was
discovered along the banks of
the Rio Grande River on the
Mexican side on March 1, 1996.
Six men have ultimately been
convicted of or pleaded gunty to
charges related to Warren's
kidnapping and murder.
Saenz was represented by
Edinburg attorney Oscar
Alvarez. The Rio Grande Herald
attempted to contact Alvarez on
Tuesday morning, but was
unable to reach him.
"I think the interests of justice
were served by this outcome,"
commented Trevino. "A lot of
consideration went into this
plea, especially providing
closure for the (Warren)
family...The family was
satisfied with the outcome."
The prosecutor explained, "He
(Saenz) received a lighter

The 41st annual Starr County
Fair, set for this weekend of
March 3-5, will feature events
for the entire family.
This year's fair will feature
top entertainment sponsored by
Budweiser and Glazer's
Distributors dba Valley
Beverage. "Estruendo and
Inkieto" will perform on Friday
evening beginning at 8:00, and
"Texas Heat and Country
Roland" will perform on
Saturday evening at 8:00 and at
10:00. '
Various stage performances
will take place during the day by
dance and music groups,
featuring D.J. Johnny Zarate.
The dancing, singing, and
instrumental talents of Starr
County students will be
showcased.
Livestock, baking, youth and
adult art, youth and adult arts
and crafts, clothing, educational
posters and farm shop
competitions will be held
throughout the three-day event,
with exhibits to be viewed.
Chick and duck, rabbit, and
pig scrambles will continue to
be an open event for any
youngster attending the fair.
Sponsored by H.E.B., the
scrambles will be at 7:00, 7:30,
and 8:00 on Friday and at 5:30,
6:00, and 6:30 on Saturday
evening.
At 5:30 on Friday will be the
official Opening Ceremony of
the Fair, at which the winners of
the Queen's pageant and the
scholarship winners will be
introduced, as well as the Parade
Marshals for 2006, members of
the Lions Club of Rio Grande
City. Fair directors and all who
help with the fair will also be
recognized.
Events to be held in the
Rodeo Arena include the Stan-
County Sheriffs Posse Youth
Round-Up on Friday at 2:00 in
the rodeo arena, the Calf
Scramble at 6:00 on Saturday,
and a Team Roping sponsored
by Judy Jones Arena on Sunday,
starting at noon.
Bingo the Clown,
accompanied by Woody and
Jessica, will perform throughout

RGC Lions Club members
honored as Parade Marshals
The Rio Grande City Lions
Club will be featured as Parade
Marshals at the head of the
annual Starr County Youth Fair
parade, which will be led by the
JROTC Twelfth Cavalry
Memorial Unit from Rio Grande
City High School.
"Hitch your Wagon to a
Starr" is the theme for the
parade, which will be on
Saturday morning, March 4, at
10:00 a.m.
The Rio Grande City Lions
Club has served as volunteers
with the fair for more years than
anyone can count. They are
very visible in their orange
vests, collecting tickets at the
gate, collecting used eyeglasses
for their International vision
project, selling raffle tickets, and
serving in other capacities.
Currently serving as officers
of the 48-member organization,
which now includes women as
members, • are Jesse Solis,
president; Leonel Garza, first
vice-president. Corina Vela,
second vice-president; Rudy
Martinez, secretary; and Enrique
Gonzalez, treasurer.
The motto of Lions Club
International is "We Serve," and
serve they do. The local
members help in numerous
events throughout the year,
including the Fair, Vaquero
Days, and other events. They
collect items for the Rainbow
Room, benefiting children under
Child Protective Services. They
help send young people to the
Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville
for children with diabetes and
handicapped children. Although
the camps are free, they help
families get their children to the
camp, which is manned by
health care professionals and
Lions Club volunteers.
The Lions will have several
collection boxes at the fair for
anyone to bring used eyeglasses
to donate. These will be cleaned
up and repaired for distribution
throughout the world to those in
need.
The 2006 Starr County Fair
Queen and her court, which
were scheduled to be crowned
on Sunday, February 26, will be
featured on the Queen's float
sponsored by the Starr County
Fair Association Board of
Directors.
Parade lineup will be at the
Starr County Courthouse on
Britton Avenue, and the parade
will proceed east on Main to
historic Fort Ringgold. Out-of-
