The Home Team Advantage
First time was a charm for a
Grulla Elementary School Odyssey
of the Mind team.
Competing in the OM sub-
regional at Brownsville on Feb.
21, ihe team of lourth-graders
coached by teacher Susanne
Carpenter beat out several other
veteran schools to win first place
in Division I of the category Create
and Animate.
OM competition involves several
talents, including creativity, acting,
dancing, construction of props,
quick thinking and sometimes
gymnastics.
Fot a team from a school
entering the event for the first time
to com; away a winner is pretty
amazing.
"I tiling it was outstanding for us
to win tli first time we tried," said
Grulia Elementary Principal Rose
Pefia. "They were great. What else
can I say?"
OM events typically are a
combination of a 15-minute or so
skit and a short session of
impromptu question answering ;uxl
brainstorming.
The good teams usually spend
several months and many hours
preparing for the sub-regional
competition, which involved
hundreds of teams from the Valley.
"Their hard work paid off," Pena
said. "They spent long hours
practicing after school and on
Saturdays and Sundays.
The Rio Grande City school
district's dominance of Valley OM
continued in Brownsville.
Eleven teams from Rio out of
the 12 that entered the 1998 Sub-
Regional competition at Lopez
High School won the right to
advance to regional. The district
nearly had another team from
Grulla Elementary qualify. The
team finished fourth, one place
away from qualifying for regional.
Eight of the teams from Rio
won their respective events,
beating teams from throughout the
Valley from Brownsville, Weslaco,
McAllen, PSJA, Sharyland,
Zapata, South Texas ISD and
Edinburg, among others.
Grulla Elementary's fourth-
graders and the other 10 qualifiers
from RGC and La Grulla now are
ready for regional, which will take
place on March 6-7 at Del Mar
College in the Corpus Christi
Last year the RGC school district
sent only six teams to regional
compelili n, so nearly double
qualified this year.
OM involves students from I st -
grade through high school mid
college. Students are scored on
teamwork, self-con I ide nee,
problem- solving skills,
resourcefulness, leadership, creative
skills and risk taking.
At regional, teams will Ix:
divided into categories according to
grade level. Division I is lor
elementary students, Division II
for junior high and Division 111 tor
high school.
There were 138 teams competing
at the sub-regional from the
Region 1 Education area. T he top
1/3 of the teams in each event
advanced to regional.
The events were divided into
several categories: Pageant Wagon,
Morph Magic, Marvelous Mentor,
Camouflaged Creation, Create and
Animate and Dream Vacation.
Here are the teams from Rio
Grande City that will compete in
the regional event (Their place ol
