projcct began to build a new
church. Fr. Mozos was quite
A old-fashioned and during his years at
Immaculate Conception did not
adopt the reforms of Vatican II.
In January 1966, Fr. Agapito
Santos, OMI, succeeded Fr. Mozos
and was quite shocked that the
church was not yet using all of the
riles as instructed by the Second
Council of the Vatican. The
following year die new church was
A started across the street from the
location of the old one.
After Hurricane Beulah, the new
church was used for a shelter and
finally the new church was blessed
by Bishop Humberto S. Medcvios,
D.D. on Nov. 7, 1967. A new
convent was built for the sisters in
1968-69. As soon as the new
church was blessed, the old church
0 came down. Fr. Santos, with all his
virtues, his outreach to the
missions and building their chapels
at La Pucrta and Los Garcias, had
done what he thought was best in
tearing down the old church.
Salinas said, "At the time, I was
very upset, but later when he retired
here and I got to know him better,
he explained how the previous
|9| 0 expansions had made a new church
inevitable."
Pastors at the old church, recalled
by Salinas since 1924, were: Fr.
Gustavo Gollbach, 1924-37; Fr.
Henri Janvicn, 1937-41; Fr.
Society

Estcban deAnda, 1944-46; Fr.
Leonicio Mana Noque, 1946-49;
Fr. George Lalibcnte, 1949-51; Fr.
Pierre Tonson, 1951-56; Fr. Yves
Tyman, 1956-59; Fr. S. Mozos,
1959-65; Fr. Agapito Santos,
1965-71.
In 1970 the Holy Trinity Chapel
opened in Rio Grande City. This
town was then considered the center
of missionary irradiation and of
progressive Catholic activity.
In 1886-87, the convent was built
for the sisters and it included a
Catholic school. This order of
sisters was never allowed to mingle
with the congregation and had a
sequestered entrance to the church
and a wall around the convent.
The students came to the convent
for lessons, with the sisters living
on the second floor ar.d the rooming
students on the third. This was the
only three-story building in Starr
County. In 1878, Fr. Pitoyc,
O.M.I., had built the first chapel in
what is now the city of Hidalgo,
then known as Rancho Chapin.
In 1888, Fr. Pitoye, O.M.I., built
the church tower, which was 86 feet
high and took 56,000 bricks to
build.
The first bell in die Rio Grande
City church weighed 208 pounds
and had the "C" tone. It had been
purchased by Fr. Gaudet, O.M.I.,
on May 3, 1870 at a cost of $113.

In 1889 two more bchs were added.
One weighed 510 pounds, and had
the "A" tone; the other, weighing
1050 ounds, had the "F" tone.
Ringing simultaneously, they gave
a perfect major cord, C.F.A. Docs
anyone know where the bells were
taken when the old church was torn
down?, Salinas asked the crowd.
The altar boys would sneak in and
ring the bell, which would raise
them three or four feet off the
ground - great sport
A frame chapcl was built in 1891
in Havana in Hidalgo County for
the Catholics there.
The parish dedicated the first Grulla
chapel of San Roque on Oct. 4,
1892. It was blessed by Bishop
Pedro Verdaguer and is presently
being restored by Fr. ~ee Costa.
In 1902, Fr. Jean Bretault, O.M.I.,
better knov/n as Padre juanito, built
the first chapcl in the San
Isidro-Delmita area. He had to be
gready loved by the people to earn
the appellation "Padre Juanito",
Salinas added.
It was April 29, 1928 when the
Grotto, a replica of die beautiful
shrine at Lourdes, France was
was built in La Puerta, and in 1971
the chapcl was built in Los Garcias.
Salinas concluded, "Let's think
ahead 50 years into the 21 st century
and build now for that time,
remembering the lessons of the past
and the promise of the future."
