Community Action Council Elderly Program-King and Queen
Gonzalo & Rosario Barraz from Alvarez Community Center were
honored by friends, relatives, dignitaries and volunteers. Also
pictured is Commissioner Jose Maria Alvarez, avid supporter of the
Elderly Center.
A Cause for Celebration
Friends, dignitaries, Community
Action Council elderly program,
personnel supporters and volunteers
joined in on May 22 to celebrate
the crowning of the King Gonzalo
Barraz and Queen rosario Barraz. It
was held in the V.F.W. Hall,
Roma, Texas. The honorees were
granted their royal title for their
task on raising the "most" funds to
support their elderly program in
Starr County. The Community
Action Council has 14 nutrition
Centers this includes Starr, Zapata,
and Jim Hogg Counties.
The king and queen were
representing the Alvarez
Community Center in Los
Trevinos which has become a
valuable service center to this fast
growing community in Starr
County.
The Alvarez Community Center is
under the direction of Mrs. Olga
Escobar. Site manager; she has a
support staff of six: Minerva
Garcia, Lupita Cruz, Polo
Sepulveda, Juan Barrera and
volunteers Clemencia Cruz, Martha
Perez.
The Community Action Council of
South Texas oversees the operation
of the center and provides the needed
resources, manpower and spiritual
motivation to keep the center in the
highest level of successful
management

Children's Miracle Network
kicks off 1994 campaign

The Children's Miracle Network
benefiting the Driscoll Children's
Hospital of Corpus Christi kicked
off their 1994 Campaign for the
Children's Miracle Network
Telethon July 1, 1993 according to
Clemente Shockley, Starr County
Representative. Our 1st project for
the 1994 Campaign is a Calf Raffle
which is being donated by Omar J.
Garza, County Clerk of Stan
County which is to benefit Driscoll
Children's Hospital in Corpus
Christi. Other projects to raise
money are being considered
including a brand new 1994 Car and
a benefit Dance to be held later at
The Hill Country Ballroom.
Donations collected from Mr.
Shockley for the 1993 Children's
Miracle Network Telethon totaled
more than $19,000 from the
citizens and Businesses from Stan-
County. You can take great pride in
knowing your gift helped Driscoll
Children's Hospital reach the
amazing total of $534,212 for the
1993 Telethon. The Rio Grande
Valley area managed to reach a new
High in their Fundraising-reaching
$86,110.
The monies that are raised through
the telethon will be used to
purchase the equipment necessary to
provide the compassionate, quality
Healthcare that children of South
Texas deserve according to Mr.
Shockley.
