United Methodist
Women Meet
Hospital
Coutiaued From Pace 1
On Monday, Feb. 13, the United
Methodist Women met at the
Educational Building of the First
United Methodist Church in Rio
Grande City.
The president, Ella Montemayor,
welcomed 21 members that were
present, and Mrs. Leonor Rodriguez
read a devotional.
Mrs. Noelia Cortez read from 1
John, Chapter 4, verses 7-12, and
then presented her invited speaker,
Mrs. Oralia Pena.
Mrs. Pena presented her talk
entitled "Poverty In Our Midst".
Mrs. Pena presented well-prepared,
educational sources that stated that
problems existed even during Bible
times.
She used Hagar, Jacob, the
widow, and the blind man as
examples. She emphasized that
Christians should have more
concern for the poverty in our
country.
Mrs. Montemayor thanked Mrs.
Pena, who was then presented a gift
by Mrs. Noelia Cortez.
After the benediction, Mrs.
Noelia Cortez, the hostess, served
cake and hot chocolate. A
Valentine's theme was carried out
by the hostess.
SSA Cutting Back
Visits To Starr
Because of a reduction in our
travel funds, we are having to cut
back on how often we go to Rio
Grande City, said Jose J. Trevino,
manager of the McAllen Social
Security Office.
Beginning in March, we will go
to San Juan Plaza every first and
third Tuesday of each month, said
Trevino. For example, we will be
there March 7th and 21st, April 4th
and 18th, May 2nd and 16th, and so
on."
The Social Security
Administration now offers toll-free
service for everybody residing in
Starr County.

ambulance, Munoz said, "I have
letters from the two insurance
companies...The other company is
offering $15,000 and will allow us
to keep the vehicle." She said that
the company insuring the driver of
the other vehicle is offering to pay
the driver and passenger of the
ambulance $1000 each.
In November, one of the
hospital's two ambulances collided
with a car on the east side of Roma
while en route to the scene of a
shooting.
The directors approved a motion
calling for the hospital to accept the
settlement offered by Travelers
Insurance, the company insuring
the driver of the other vehicle.
Board chairman Noel Benavides
stressed, "Be sure that we get our
ambulance back."
On plans to pave some parking
areas and entrances near the
hospital, Munoz said, "We're still
at a standstill with paving. We
might have to change some of the
areas we're paving."
Upon the recommendations
submitted by Blue Cross/Blue
Shield to Munoz, the directors
voted to increase prices for a
number of hospital services.
Munoz said, "In the past, they
never approved more than a 10
percent increase. This is not the
same increase across the board."
She added, "He (the Blue Cross
representative) said he was trying to
get the rate up to the statewide
average."
Under the plan, rates for a private
room will increase from S140 to
S160 a day, with a semi-private
room increasing from SI28 io
5148. The ambulance base charge
will be increased from $60 to $90.
Prices were increased for a number
of other services as well.
Munoz indicated, "Rates for a
private room are still considerably
lower than for Valley hospitals."
Munoz discussed several recent
instances of vandalism in hospital
parking lots. She nolcd, "A couple
of employees have had windows
broken. One person had hubcaps
stolen from their car."
Worst of all, said the
administrator, "Yesterday, a man's
car was stolen in the parking lot.

Munoz said, "I asked for quotes
as to what it would cost to fence
the parking lot. Rio Fence quoted a
price of $4378. To put in a
computerized gate would cost at
least $4000. One gate would mean
better control. To do all that could
cost around $10,000."
LaGrange moved that the hospital
make a commitment to the idea of
fencing the employee parking lot,
with planning to be worked out
later. That motion passed
unanimously.
Munoz told the directors, "We've
started painting inside the building.
We need to contract with someone
to paint the outside of the building.
I would like especially to see the
doors painted. JTPA may be a good
way to go." The matter was then
tabled for the time being.
Concerning insurance for the
hospital building and apartments,
the directors voted to renew with
Hartford Insurance, with Garza
Insurance serving as the local
representative. Munoz said that a
$3000 reduction in the price had
been negotiated in the past month.
About the Quality Assurance
Report, Munoz noted that the
hospital had an average daily census
of 26 patients in January, about the
same as in December. The
occupancy rate in January was 60
percent.
In January, said Munoz, 40
surgeries were performed and 47
babies were delivered. There were
481 visits to the emergency room,
with 86 of these being admitted to
the hospital. During the month, 23
patients were transferred to other
hospitals.
When giving the financial
reports, controller Tommy Saenz
noted, "We're now collecting more
than we're writing off."
He said that total operating
revenue for January totaled
$409,782,76, with net patient
service revenue amounting to
$435,080.31. Total expenses were
$402,374, and non-operating
revenues (mostly taxes) were
$207,301.31. The total surplus for
the month was $199,604.
Saenz indicated that the total
surplus for the four months of the
1988-1989 fiscal year amounts to
$360,555.93. The bulk of this
surplus, he stressed, comes from
tax revenue.
JoAnna Hinojosa, a third grade student at Immaculate
Conception School, won first place in a Diocesan
Catholic Schools Essay Contest. The purpose of the
contest was to celebrate Catholic Schools Week.
JoAnna won first place in her division of second and
third grades with her essay, entitled "Our Catholic
School Community." In order to qualify as a Diocesan
entrant, she had to place within her own school as the
second and third grade winner. ICS Principal Sister
Judy Scheffler presented her a blue ribbon got the local
competition, and she received a blue rosette ribbon for
her Diocesan win. She is pictured here with Sister Judy
and the third grade teacher, Mrs. Cecilia Porras. JoAnna
is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hinojosa of Rio
Grande City.
