Rio Band Competes
Well At Alice
The Mighty Rattler Band of Rio
Grande City High School
performed well at regional band
competition in Alice Saturday
night.
The two 5-A bands that advanced
to state competition were San
Antonio Marshall and San Antonio
Southwest. Edinburg was chosen as
the alternate band.
The schools that competed at
Alice are located south of a line
from Del Rio through San Antonio
to Victoria to Port Lavaca. A total
of six 5-A bands, including Rio
Grande City, competed at Alice.
Band Director A1 Cortinas said,
"The kids performed really, really
well. In my mind, they performed
just as well, probably a little
better, than at Pigskin (in McAllen
on Oct. 8). The kids were ready to
go and did real well It was a very,
very solid performance."
Cortinas stressed that "every
band at that level of competition is
so well-prepared. The music we
played was very classy, but also
very difficult." He noted that when
scores are tabulated, the highest
and lowest ratings are thrown out
and the average of the middle
three evaluations are figured as the
score.
The Rattler Band's musical
selection was "Carmina Burana "
Earlier, assistant band director
Rogerio Olivarez indicated that this
song "is a collection of 13th century
songs written by wandering monks,
troubadors, and goliards (traveling
minstrels) in Europe Most of the
writings are credited to the
monks."
Olivarez added, "The song itself
has 13 little songs making up the
entire selection "
A total of five judges evaluated
the bands. Some comments about
the Rio band are listed below as
follows:
Bill Peace said, "Excellent liter-
ature choice. I really appreciate
young people getting a chance to
play music of this quality Nice
tone qualities, good teaching evi-
dent...Good overall performance,
you really got the crowd in your
favor. Good use of effect and ww's
to create unusual flavor."
Henry Schraub said, "Great
musical selection. Nice flute work
Great design, staging. "
Larry Campbell said, "Excellent,
very musical. You demonstrate a
good concept of what you do
(Carmina). Excellent marching,
only minor flaws. Super auxiliary
effectiveness "
Scott Taylor said, "Super music
selection. Super woodwinds. Super
percussion. Very dramatic perfor- W
mance. Super uniformity in
marching. Generally very good
precisionn (in marching). Super
(auxiliary effectiveness and vari-
ety). A real treat."
Cortinas stressed, "I think this
has been one of our best years for
the band. It's been a joy to teach
the kids, and watch them
perform."
Cortinas concluded, "I want to ^
thank all of the people from Rio ^
Grande City that went all the way
to Alice. It made the kids feel good
to see so many people down here
supporting us."
He added, "We've very
appreciative of the support by our
administration and faculty We
want to thank our Band Booster?
that have been so supportive."
