The Rio Grande City Lady
Rattlers basketball team is gearing
up for their second season in
District 31-5A, and hoping to
leapfrog into the top reaches of the
district.
The Lady Rattlers were sched-
uled to play their first game of the
season at home Monday night
against Zapata at 7:30 p.m.
Coach Gracie Gonzalez expresses
hope and optimism about the
team's outlook, noting that the
Lady Rattlers this year are heavily
comprised of seniors. Four starters
will be returning from the 1986-87
team.
She said, "We're pretty quick;
we don't have that much height.
We need to work on quickness and
playing good defense. We're going
to try and go with a fast break."
The coach added, "We're going
to work basically on man-to man
defense, because most of the teams
play man-to-man defense. We're
going to concentrate on being a
pressing team most of the game."
The four returning starters from
last season are sophomore post
Myrna Bazan, junior forward
Norma De La Cruz, senior post-
forward Bertha Alaniz, and senior
point guard Priscilla Saenz. Other
vital returnees are seniors Maribel
Bermea, Angie Salinas, and Loreen
Lopez. Three girls just now coming
up from the junior varsity are
Andrea Lopez, Mary Jo Sanchez,
and Abigail Gonzalez.
About Myrna Bazan, Gonzalez
said, "Myrna's height will help us
a lot; she's pretty fast and quick
around the boards for rebounds."
The coach commented about
Norma De La Cruz, "Norma has a
good outside shot and she can read
the defense pretty well."
Gonzalez commented that Bertha
Alaniz "is very good under the
boards." The coach said that
Loreen Lopez "didn't get to play
much last year because of an ankle
injury at the beginning of the
season. She's a very t ong of-
fensive player; she should help us
out a lot."
Returning point guard Priscilla
Saenz, said Gonzalez, "should be
helping us out on defense and in
controlling the tempo of the
game." She predicted that return-
ing forward-guard Angie Salinas
"will help us a lot offensively
She'll be a forward and a point
guard also."
Gonzalez predicted that Maribel
Bermea "is going to help us a lot.
She's a hustler, hard-working, and
will help both offensively and
defensively. She'll be sharing a
starting position with one of the
other girls. I have her playing now
in the wing position, but hopefully
she'll help us in the point guard
position."
About the district outlook this
year, Gonzalez commented,
"Everybody should be strong, with
Edinburg, McAllen, and McAllen
Memorial looking like very strong
teams. Edinburg and McAllen
reached the playoffs last year, and
have just about everybody back "
The Rattlers will complete in the
Weslaco tournament this Thursday
through Saturday They will begin
their district campaign on the road
Dec 15 against Laredo Martin and
will play their home district opener
on Jan. 8 against McAllen High.
THE HERALD
SPORTS
called for the location U be
wherever designated by the Pre-
cinct One commissioner.
At the end of the meeting, Pena
said he wanted to go on record as
requesting the Texas Highway
Department to make a study about
the possibility of rleff turn lantf on
U.S. 83 between Roma and Rio
Grande City, for at least part of the
way.
Pena noted the heavy traffic flow
and a number of serious, and even
deadly, traffic accidents between
Roma and Rio Grande City over
the last few years. It was noted
that Judge Martinez would sign
such a letter to the Highway |
Department.
