National Adoption
Week Nov. 22-28
The week of Nov. 22-28 has been
declared National Adoption Week
by the North American Council on
Adoptable Children
It is a time to celebrate and
honor those families that have been
built through adoption, but it is also
a time to consider the children who
are waiting for adoptive families.
Traditionally, when families are
considering adopting a child, they
wanted to adopt a baby. In recent
years, however, fewer healthy
infants are available for adoption
and families have increasingly
begun to consider adopting older
children
It is estimated that at least 35,000
older children are available to be
adopted in the United States today.
Most of these children are over
eight years old and many have
health or learning problems.
In Texas, most older children are
placed in adoption by the Texas
Department of Human Services
which has offices throughout the
stats.
Adoption specialists report that
they presently need families to
adopt special needs children such
as groups of brothers and sisters
who need to be placed together in
adoption or older children with
physical, emotional or mental
disabilities.
Anyone seeking information
about adopting a child should call
399-5362 or 682-1301.

Emma Vera, and Ella Kamos had
attended the monthly meeting of
the Laredo branch on Oct. 17 Mrs.
Irene Ramirez, state president,
was present at that meeting.
After the meeting was adjourned,
Mrs. Juanita Volpe introduced Mrs.
Tillie Pena, a Roma busi-
nesswoman. She presented an
interesting speech on self-
awareness
She said the concept has helped
her in business, social, and family
matters. She stated that we must
dwell on today, look at the inner
self and love the self for a most
successful and fulfilling life.
Changing Image Of
The Extended Family
Hs YOUVIM MORADO
( <nint\ Home Kconomist
Recent historical research has
challenged the nostalgic images of
the extended three or more
generations living under the same
roof, sharing work and play, and
ready at a moment's notice to
assist in manual tasks or offer
emotional support
In fact, while the extended
family has remained a cherished
ideal in both traditional and
modern societies, it has been
feasible mainly for members of
higher socioecenemic groups
Studies documents the continuing
importance of the extended family
in contemporary American life.
For Native Americans and Mex-
ican American families, assistance
from the extended family is char
aeteristic Such kin relationships
may be very meaningful even if
family members don't share the
same home
Extended family members are
most likely to offer support during
a time of need During periods of
stress, many individuals reevaluate
their kir relationships and realize
how helpful relatives can De
Pooling the experiences and
enthusiasm of several generations
of a family into a kinship network
continues to be one of the most
sought-after family systems The
nurturance of a family seems to be
unequaled by any other group,
even in families experiencing sig-
nificant changes and transition

AUSTIN-Texas pioneers used to
brag that "other states were
carved or born, but Texas grew
from hide and horn." The saying is
fairly accurate, because in the
minds and hearts of many-Texas
is Cattle Country.
But what's been happening to a"
Cattle Country" lately? In fact, the
entire picture of Texas agriculture
has undergone some drastic
changes over the past few years,
and just where producers go from
here is anybody's guess.
To help bring this picture into
focus, the Texas Agricultural
Statistics Service will begin con-
tacting farmers and ranchers
across the state in late November

to 1987 acreage, yield and produc-
tion totals and end-of-year livestock
and poultry inventories.
The confidential interviews con
ducted by mail, telephone or in
person by field enumerators pro-
vide information used by producers
to make their plans for the coming
year.
"A sound marketing plan re-
quires good, reliable information
and some advanced planning In-
formation from our reports pro-
vides producers with solid facts
and figures they can incorporate
into their marketings plans for the
coming year," state statistician
Dennis Findley reported.
The Texas service will be trying
to keep survey costs at a minimum
this year because of budget cuts
made by the Texas Legislature, so
Findley is urging producers to
return their mailed questionnaires
as soon as possible.
"Despite these cuts, we still plan
to do our best to provide Texas
farmers and ranchers with accu-
rate, unbiased information they
can use in making their day-to-day
production and marketing plans,"
Findley added
"Texas producers need all the
information they can get just to
help them survive these severe
economic times."
