Fire Dept Receives Check
From Farm Bureau

The Rio Grande City Volunteer
Fire Department recently received
two checks of $150 from Texas
Farm Bureau Insurance Compa-
nies as an expression of thanks for
the department's work on the
property of Jorge Luis Saenz, Box
8, Santa Elena, and Reel G. Cantu,
Route 2, Box 114C, Rio Grande
City.
The money, says Texas Farm
Bureau, will be used for their loss
prevention program.
The Texas Farm Bureau Insur-
ance Companies pay fire depart-
ments this amount when the
department works at a fire in rural
areas involving property insured
by them.
The insurance company says it
hopes that this money will help the
Rio Grande City Volunteer Fire
Department in preventing fires and
in reducing losses caused by fires.
Four National Football League
quarterbacks had five touchdown
passes in one game in 1984. They were
John Elway of Denver, Dave Krieg of
Seattle, Dan Marino of Miami and
Marc Wilson of the Los Angeles

Roma mayor Jose Carlos Saenz is being congratulated
and presented a plaque by Jeanie Hicks of the Texas
Sesquicentennial Commission. On May 16, the state
commission officially sanctioned Roma as a Ses-
quicentennial city.

The city of Roma recently held
its sanctioning ceremony for status
as a Sesquicentennial city.
Jeanie Hicks, representing the
state Sesquicentennial Commission,
performed the sanctioning ceremo-
ny on May 16, presenting the
Sesquicentennial flag and plaque to
Roma Mayor Jose Carlos Saenz.
Observing the ceremony were
representatives from various
groups such as Roma schools,
religious groups, youth, and local
organization groups.
A more elaborate celebration is
planned for September, with the
exact date to be announced later.
The Roma band, V.F.W. post, Boy
and Girl Scout troops, and other
organizations will participate.
Here, the Sesquicentennial flag will
be presented to the Roma citizens
and will be flown above the Roma
plaza.
A jamaica will follow, with local
and religious organizations
sponsoring food booths and games.
Leaders of the Roma Ses-
quicentennial Committee say they
are very pleased and proud at this
prestigious recognition granted to
Roma, and urges all Roma and
Starr County citizens, plus neigh-
boring Mexican citizens, to provide
their help and support in making
the patriotic celebration a big
