New Obstetrical Clinic
To Begin Operation
The planned opening of an
obstetrical clinic near the hospital
Thursday may start a new trend in
medical care in Starr County,
according to organizers of the
clinic.
The clinic will open Thursday in
quarters formerly occupied by Dr
Mario Ramirez near Starr County
Memorial Hospital. Five locai
doctors- l.oberto Gonzalez, Antonio
Falcon, Robert Cortes, Jr.,
Raymond Mussett, and Sergio
Rodriguez- will work with the
clinic, said Rodriguez, the hospi-
tal's chief of medical staff.
Rodriguez said that the clinic will
handle normal uncomplicated de-
liveries. Any mother with any
pregnancy problem will be cared
for by the hospital. Also, deliveries
requiring operative procedures will
be handled by the hospital.
Local doctors say they hope this
clinic is only the beginning.
Rodriguez said that current plans
call for starting a "Multi-Specialty
Clinic" in three to six months.
Rodriguez hopes that "specialists
in various fields can provide
consultation on a parttime basis."
Rodriguez said, "The idea is to
minimize the need for transporta-
tion outside the community. We
feel everyone will benefit from this
The local people will be provided
services that were lacking here
before."
Falcon said, "It'll provide health
care at a minimal cost to the
patient. That's very important to
consider in this area."
Rodriguez said that specialists in
orthopedics, cardiology, pulmonary
medicine, and an ear, nose and
throat specialist have expressed in
letters the desire to work with the
clinic on a regular basis. Also, a
r-idioncologist (cancer therapist)
and physical therapist have in-
dicated an intention to provide
consultation at the clinic
Rodriguez said, "A lot of these
doctors are already seeing the
people in this area. They'll be able
to do consultation on patients at the
hospital as well as on an outpatient
basis."
He added, "We want to provide
the equipment the doctors desitre
in order to work at peak efficiency
to make time up here worthwhile
for the patient and for them."
Among the equipment being sought
is a basic lab facility, a spirometer
for pulmonary medicine, an EKG
for the cardiologist, and a fetal
monitor.
For the intensive care unit at the
hospital, Rodriguez said it is hoped
that a Swann-Gantz machine can
be acquired that can help monitor
patients with acute heart diseases.
Falcon said, "Basically, our
intent is to match the hospital in
equipment. But we do not intend to
function as a hospital; this will be
strictly ambulatory."
Falcon added, "We do plan to
help the hospital by expanding
surgeries to include orthopedics,
eye surgery, neurological surgery,
and possibly add a rehabilitative
medicine area We plan to help the
hospital by having the specialists
consult their patients here when
feasible.
Rodriguez said that in the future,
it is hoped that a day surgery unit
to perform low risk procedures can
be started. It is also hoped that a
minor emergency unit to operate
after hours can be set up. He
emphasized, however, that these
two goals are merely in the
informal discussion stage now.
Rodriguez said, "The clinic is a
private enterprise that will provide
service to any patient, provided
that they pay before or close to the
time of delivery." He added, "We
figure that we can save expectant
mothers 50 percent,"
Dr. Mario Ramirez sold his share
of the building to Rio Medical
Associates, who have renovated the
building for the clinic. Dr. Roberto
Gonzalez will occupy the space
formerly used by Ramirez, said
Rcxiriguez. Two offices that used to
belong to Ramirez and Gonzalez
are planned to be utilized with the
multi-specialty clinic.
The British House of Lords passed
the Stamp Act in 1765 to tax the
American colonies.
President Zachary Taylor appointed
the first Secretary of the Interior in
1849. He was Thomas Ewing of Ohio.
In 1894, New York State enacted the
first dog-licensing law in the nafion.

The students displayed their
competitive skills to the utmost in
all areas. But this was most
evident when Norabei Gonzalez,
Teresa Bazan, and Rosalba Reyes
were competing in the same heat
against each other, and against
five other girls in the soccer skills
These three Roma girls were able
to capture the gold, silver, and
bronze medals.
Besides competing, the students
also enjoyed a beautiful day at
Zilker Park in Austin
