Many members had filled out papers
tracing their ancestors back four

Band try-outs held in Alice, Texas on
January 17, 1981. These students were
selected by try-outs to represent the Valley
at the Area auditions. Students par-
ticipating were Miss Leticia Trevino, Miss
Marieela Leal, and Mr. Ricky Longoria.
Two students earned chairs in the All-State
Band and one student missed being selected
by one chair.
Miss Leticia Trevino, Junior at Rio High,
is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Arturo
Trevino. Leticia placed twelfth chair at
these try-outs and only eleven are selected.
There were fifty-five students trying-out
from our area on Clarinet. Leticia has
consistently been selected as one of the best
Clarinetists in the Valley for past three
years. She has also been very active in the
Mighty Marching Band's Flag Corp and is
the principal clarinetist for the Rio High
Wind Ensemble.
Miss Marieela I^eal, Junior at Rio High, is
the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Procopio I^eal.
Marieela was selected as the best E-flat
Clarinetist of our region and will represent
this Area at the state level. Marieela has
been playing E-flat Clarinet for only five
months. She replaced Mrs. Claudina
Canales Curz, who was our All-State E-flat
Clarinetist last year. She is also a twirler
with the Mighty Marching Rattler Bank and
has consistently been a member of the All-
Valley Bands. Marieela is the principal Solo
E-flat Clarinetist of the Rio High Wind
Ensemble. Marieela and Leticia both study
privately with Mr. Roel Elizondo, clarinet
instructor for the Rio High Music Depart-
ment.
Ricky Longoria, Sophomore at Rio High,
is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Miguel "Mickey"
Ixingoria. Ricky was selected to the All-
State Band as a trumpet player. He has also
been an All-Valley Band member con-
sistently. Ricky is also principal cornet
player in the Rio High Wind Ensemble and
has been our lead player in the Mighty
Marching Rattler Band. Ricky studies
privately with Mr. Carlos Ruiz, high brass
instructor for the Rio High Music Depart-
ment.
These students competed with students
from an area that stretches from Eagle
Pass to San Antonio. Port Lavaca to Corpus
Christi and on down to Brownsville. These
students will participate with the All-State
Band during the Texas Music Educator's
Association Convention to be held in San
Antonio on February 11, 12, 13, and 14, 1981.
Rio Grande City High School is extremely
proud of these students and their per-
formance. May they continue to grow
musically and continue bringing honor to
their school and community
