Book Review Heard by-
Study Club Mem bers
In light of the current
energy crisis, club member
Ida Perez cose to review the
book "The Complete Solar
House" by Bruce Cassidy as
her program on con-
servation for the Florence J.
Scott Study Club at their
December meeting.
The prugram chairman
explained that the earth's
supply of fossil fuel such as
coal and natural gas and
nuclear fuel are finite, or
limited. They have been
exploited fully. Solar energy,
however, is an inexhaustible
source of energy for the
future.
Solar energy is free for the
using, and it is clean with no
dangers from fall-out, smoke
or pollution. It may be used
to generate electricity or to
produce cells, such as at the
local high school. It may also
be used to heat, cool, and to
run homes.
Mrs. Perez distributed
hand out sheets which ex-
plained passive and active
solar systems, the typical
delivery system, and
examples of solar homes
that can be custom built.
The cost of a solar heating
system in a well insulated
1800 square foot house would
now be approximately $8,000
but it would more than pay
for itself in five to eight
years. It also increases the
value of a home by forty-six
percent. The most practical
way to have a solar heated
home, she added, is to build
it from scratch.
The speaker went on to say
that since water heating uses
much fuel and installment of
a solar water heating system
is the easiest and most
economical, this is a good
starting place for in-
corporating solar heating
systems into today's already
existing homes. This may
even be done with do-
it-yourself kits. Although
there are still some "bugs"
in solar systems, this is a
rapidly developing field and
is being used more and more
in its various forms. The
speaker gave pointers to
anyone planning to have a
solar system installed and
pointed out that it is a tax
advantage as well, since it

saves energy for our
country's future. She con-
dluded by advising the
members to "plug in the
sun!"
Following the program,
refreshments were served
by co-hostesses Margarita
Garza and Rosie Garcia. The
meeting, held at the Garcia
residence, began with
members reciting the
Collect. Each responded to
roll call with a favorite
childhood memory. As a
devotional, members sang
"Silent Night," ac-
companied or, the piano by
Miss Clarissa Garcia.

It's that special time of year, and a feeling abounds
that is unique to this holiday season. It is the spirit of
Christmas, and it means different things to each of us,
but it has a sameness too, for it echoes of love. E. C
Baird wrote: "I am the Christmas spirit! I enter the
home of poverty, causing palefaced children to open
their eyes wide, in pleased wonder. I cause the miser's
clutched hand to relax, and thus paint a bright spot on
his soul. I cause the aged to renew their youth and to
laugh in the old, glad way. I keep romance live in the
heart of childhood, and brighten sleep with dreams
woven of magic. I cause eager feet to climb dark
stairways with filled baskets, leaving behind hearts
amazed at the goodness of the world. I cause the
prodigal to pause a moment on his wild, wasteful way,
and send to anxious love some little token that releases
glad tears-tears which wash away the hard lines of
sorrow. I enter dark prison cells, reminding scarred
manhood of what might have been, and pointing for-
ward to good days yet to be. I come softly into the still,
white home of pain, and lips that are too weak to speak
just tremble in silent, eloquent gratitude. In a
thousand ways, I cause the weary world to look up into
the face of God, and for a little moment forget the
things that are small and wretched. I am the Clirist-
mas spirit!"
The Christmas story will be told in song at a cantata
presentation this Sunday evening. The public is
welcome to attend "Ix)ve Transcending" at the First
Baptist Church at 7:00 p.m. The combined choirs of
FBC and the St. John United Methodist Church will
present the beautiful Christmas program.
Christmas card
Received a Christmas card at the Herald this
week from Alta M. Jones of Kermit, Texas. She
writes, "I would like to wish you a very enjoyable
Christmas and Best wishes for the coming New
Year-in memory of my Dear Friend Minnie M.
"Mom" Dugan from Rio Grande City who passed
away in 1976 at Retama Manor in McAllen. You
were so kind to send me notice from Rio Grande
paper. I lived at Rio back in the days of Ft.
Ringgold. We were stationed there with the old
12th cavalry Had card and note today from Elsie
Rademacher, a dear friend from Rio. Also am
very fond of Ramon Elizondo family and Nieves
Elizondo family. By the way, I was 80 years old in
September. My son, Austin Roberts graduated
from Rio High School, I believe in 1938. I
remember the Shuffords and others whose names
escape my memory."
