Fire Chief
Monday afternoon at 5:50
p.m. the Rio Grande City
Volunteer Fire Department was
called :o a house fire in La
Grulla.
The firemen and trucks
arrived on the scene at G:15
p.m., too late to save any of the
house, but a house nearby was
about to catch fire from the
strong winds and. the firemen
were able to save that house.
The citizens of La Grulla, La
Casita, San Isidro, and Roma,
deserve better Fire Protection.
If the firemen are unable to
arrive at a house fire within 10
minutes after it starts, nine
times out of ten, the house will
burn, where as if the firemen
arrive soon enough they can
confine the fire to only one area.
The house in La Grulla could
have been saved by local
trained personnel with a water
truck and a pump on it.
Why not get Volunteer Fire
Departments started in these
areas? Trucks could be ob-
tained from Army Supply and
converted into Fire Fighting
Trucks for less than $3,000.00
each, and placed in these areas,
and train Volunteers to man
them.
I'll take my hat off to the
Firemen from Roma. They
have ?tayed together with

practically no help. They need a
pumper truck, more hoses, and
better nozzles. Why don't some
of you citizens from Roma get
behind them, I'm sure Roma
can afford to get better
equipment for the firemen, and
you merchants and home owner
deserve this protection.
From reading this article you
may get the impression that the
Rio Grande City Volunteer Fire
Department do not want to
make out of town calls, "This is
not the case." We want you to
call us, and you should call us,
but if there were a truck in that
area, the local men could get
there much quicker, thus
confining the fire to a smaller
area or even put it out before
the volunteers from Rio Grande
City would have time to arrive.
I know one thing it would cut
our fire loss considerably.
It was on Palm Sunday, April
9, 1865, that Gen. Robert E. Lee

Ulysses Grant at Appomattox
Court House, Va., assuring the
end of the Civil War.
