Rio Grande High School Band
Band Wins Unanimous 1st
Bv Diana J. Villarreal
The Rio Grande City High
School Marching Rattler Band
returned triumphant from the
32nd Annual Pigskin Music
Jubilee. The Rio Rattler Band
received a unanimous First
Division rating from the contest
judges, and were the only Class
AAA school to garner a First
Division.
The band spent long hours
during their lunch periods, after
school and in the evenings,
perfecting their contest drill.
The long hard hours paid off
last Saturday evening,
however, as they learned of
their victory, and brought back
their hard-earned irophy from
the Weslaco Field.
The Rio High Band used a
Spanish theme for their contest
presentation. It was titled
"Moments of a Bullfighter,"
and incorporated some of the
more beautiful Spanish songs
ever written. The band formed
a series of intricate patterns r.1
the field as they played
"Valencia," "Malaguena,"
"Virgen de la Macarena," and
"Laredo." During the
Macarena" sequence, Bonnie
Munoz, Olivia Gonzalez, Albeza
Ramirez and Yolanda Perez did
a high step and a bow signifying
the prayers of the bullfighter
before the fight. The band
played a fanfare from
"Laredo" and marched off the
field to the same tune. The band
ended its drill with an "Ole"
before leaving the field.
The members of the Rio High
School Marching Band who
participated in bringing home
these honors for Rio Grande
City are: Maribel Canales, Ma.
Luis Salinas Given Merit
Honor Commendation
Principal Ramiro Barrpra of
Roma High School announced
that Luis E. Salinas received a
letter of Commendation from
the National Merit Program of
The National Merit Scholarship
Corporation.
These students are among the
38,000 Commended students
named on the basis of their high
performance on 1973
Preliminary Scholastic Ap-
titude Test/National Merit
Scholarship Quality Test i PSAT
NMSQT). Commended students
are in the upper 2 percent of
those who are expected to
graduate from high school in
1975.
Although the Commended
Students ranked high on the
PS AT/NMSQT, their scores
were just below those of the
15,000 Semifinalists who were
announced in September by
NMSC; Commended students
do not continue in the Merit
Scholarship competition.
Edward C. Smith, president
of MNSC. "The hieh standing of
Commended students in the
Merit Program shows their
great promise, and their at-
tainment in this nationwide
program deserves public
recognition. The commended
students should be encouraged
to continue their education.
Both these students and our
nation will benefit from their
further educational and per-
sonal development."
